About the role
The Switchboard PBX Operator staffs the Main Lobby Information Desk and the Telecommunication Office, serving as a vital point of contact for patients, visitors, staff, and the general public. This role requires a comprehensive knowledge of the hospital, its services, and personnel, ensuring efficient communication and a welcoming environment while maintaining situational awareness and responding to emergency requests.
Responsibilities
- Provide information and directions to patients, visitors, and staff.
- Operate telecommunication systems to answer, assess, and route calls.
- Respond to and manage emergency requests and alarms.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace in both the lobby and telecommunication office.
- Ensure confidentiality of all employee, physician, and patient information.
- Greet, direct, and assist visitors and patients at the Information Desk.
- Operate Spok Console Suite to provide information and directions.
- Act as an informational resource regarding all departments and services.
- Work with Admissions, Security, Valet Service, and Patient Transport Services.
- Maintain the lobby area, ensuring cleanliness and availability of PPE.
- Contact Environmental Services and Facilities for maintenance issues.
- Answer all incoming calls from the general public, patients, physicians, and staff.
- Routinely route calls to the appropriate location as directed by department guidelines.
- Utilize the public address system for emergency notifications and routine announcements.
- Aid staff, physicians, and patients in placing outgoing calls.
- Maintain awareness of changes to off-shift and on-call staff and physicians.
- Monitor and take action with security and facility alarms (Signet/Rauland, Zettler, Simplex, Beacon Medical Products, Pelmac, Pinpoint/Help Alert, AiPhone, Call24).
- Keep current of all Inter-department communications through department, and hospital-wide email, Shift Reports, Operator Notes in Spok Console Suite, memos, hospital publications, and verbal report between shifts from colleagues.
- Participate in assigned role in disaster drills and other emergency situations.
- Properly dispose of all PHI at the end of each shift.
- Follow specific guidelines related to the Daily Shift Duties for the Information Desk and Switchboard.
Qualifications
- A High School Graduate / GED is required.
- One year of hospital switchboard/communications experience is preferred.
