Switchboard Operator

About the role

Novant Health is seeking a detail-oriented Switchboard Operator to support hospital communications and safety monitoring at Forsyth Medical Center. This position plays a key role in implementing emergency procedures and ensuring efficient communication across the facility.

Responsibilities

• Operate a computerized switchboard console to manage internal and external calls
• Monitor critical hospital systems including the fire panel, blood bank, oxygen panel, and elevators
• Respond to emergencies and initiate appropriate routing and alert protocols
• Maintain calm and professionalism during high-pressure situations
• Ensure timely and accurate communication with staff, departments, and emergency services

Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED, required.

Experience: Minimum of one year experience as switchboard operator, preferred.

Skills

• Ability to communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and all levels of authority
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Flexibility to respond to changing priorities in a fast‑paced environment
• Ability to type at least 30 wpm
• Manual dexterity necessary to operate computerized switchboard console and keyboard
• Ability to work alone during day, evening, and night
• Ability to see and read
• Clear, pleasant and professional telephone voice and manner
• Ability to hear and understand phone calls

Schedule

Shift Details: Week 1 – One weekday and Saturday; Week 2 – Sunday and one weekday.
