About the role

Route incoming, outgoing, and inter-hospital calls during a 24-hour period.

Responsibilities

  • Operate telephone switchboard and route calls to the proper area in the hospital.
  • Contact necessary persons involved in a code Rapid Response, C-Port, or Stroke.
  • Provide general information to the public.
  • Place long-distance calls for the hospital and assist patients with long-distance requests.
  • Monitor all emergency alarm systems for the hospital.
  • Report all telephone malfunctions.
  • Maintain paging services for organizations associated with the hospital.
  • Record daily on-call rosters for all shifts.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the work area; perform weekly cleaning of the office (night shift responsibility).
  • Night shift: check all forms, tally calls, check supplies, clean and stock office, and check all equipment for paper and replacement items.
  • Operate AMCOM PBX phone system, including all components involved.
  • Provide and maintain all pagers used by hospital staff.
  • Maintain expired list of patients and report this information to the Medical Records Department.
  • Record transfers to other hospitals and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain monthly schedules for departments needed in emergencies and notify departments when updates are required.
  • Respond to requests to contact the Operating Room Recovery Team as needed.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
  • May be required to change shifts or days to meet office needs.
  • Eligible Communication associates must participate in rotating weekend call (Friday evening to Monday morning).
  • Off-shift associates (evening and night shift) will participate in a four-day shift training period: two days between January and June, and two days between July and December.
  • Maintain open communication with Director and Supervisor regarding status and availability changes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1-2 years prior operator experience, either as a telephone company operator or a doctor's office receptionist.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow policies and procedures for Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak or communicate in English to accomplish essential duties.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior supporting the hospital's mission, values, and compliance with laws.
  • Exhibit professionalism, courtesy, and excellent customer service.
  • Work effectively with culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.

Pay

This position has a hiring range of USD $18.40 - USD $29.74 per hour.
