Swing Shift Maintenance Machine Technician

Torus · Salt Lake City, UT · 2 wk ago
Management$32–$45/hrFull-time

Torus is headquartered in Utah and is expanding manufacturing at our 545,000-square-foot facility in Salt Lake City called GigaOne. We are the world’s first mesh energy infrastructure, uniting communities through resilient, sustainable, and intelligent power. We design, engineer, manufacture, install, and support our systems end-to-end, standing behind them throughout their lifecycle. Torus systems help reduce costs, lower emissions, and protect facilities from outages, while strengthening the security and reliability of the broader utility grid. Torus is committed to American manufacturing, engineering excellence, and building energy systems that last.

About the role

As a Maintenance Machine Tech A, you will serve as the senior technical leader on the front lines of Torus’s manufacturing mission. You will be responsible for the hands-on repair, precision alignment, preventive maintenance, and capital improvement of advanced industrial machinery—including CNC equipment, lasers, waterjets, and automated systems. Reporting to the Director of HSE & Facilities, you will direct shift priorities, mentor other tech staff, and rapidly troubleshoot complex electrical, mechanical, and PLC failures to minimize downtime. During peak operational hours, you will also act as a High-Level Production Support Specialist to optimize machine throughput and keep production moving as we scale renewable energy infrastructure.

You are an experienced, self-motivated industrial maintenance expert who thrives in a fast-paced, rapidly scaling manufacturing environment. You bring deep technical knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and PLC systems, combined with a proactive, ownership-driven mindset. You stay calm and composed under pressure, approaching complex machine breakdowns with clear logic and urgent problem-solving. As a natural technical leader and safety role model, you take pride in mentoring junior technicians, collaborating across teams, and maintaining high 5S and standard work principles. Most importantly, you are passionate about solving complex engineering and climate challenges, eager to master new technologies, and excited to help build reliable, clean energy infrastructure that lasts.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex mechanical repairs, full rebuilds, setups, and teardowns on manufacturing assets, including multi-axis machines, automated controllers, robotics, CNC Machines, Laser Cutting systems, Waterjet Cutting equipment, and Presses.
  • Execute routine and in-depth preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and servicing to catch deficiencies before they cause failure.
  • Own PM scheduling for the team, review reports, technical diagrams, and blueprints, and lead the development of PM instructions with Production.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose complex mechanical, electrical (high- and low-voltage), hydraulic, pneumatic, PLC, motor control, pump, and software systems.
  • Respond immediately to machine-down emergency conditions on the production floor, directing Tech B and Tech C support as needed to minimize downtime.
  • Serve as a High-Level Production Support Specialist during peak operational hours—proactively monitoring machine performance and providing immediate technical intervention to optimize throughput when maintenance backlogs are clear.
  • Perform machine leveling, precision alignment, and mechanical assembly maintenance.
  • Assist in the layout, setup, and movement of new manufacturing equipment during GigaOne facility expansion.
  • Identify, source, and replace parts; manage critical spares inventory and coordinate with external suppliers or maintenance vendors as needed.
  • Lead assigned capital improvement projects from concept to completion (drawings, BOM, part fabrication/sourcing, PLC programming, assembly, testing, and safety sign-off).
  • Inspect facility infrastructure and utility systems regularly to identify and address potential issues prior to equipment failure. Utilize designated maintenance windows for deep-cleans, facility renovations, and long-term equipment upgrades.
  • Install and maintain electrical distribution (up to 480V and 400A), run conduit, voice/data lines, liquid/pneumatic plumbing, and air lines as required.
  • Maintain 5S standards, housekeeping, and visual management across all maintenance shop areas and equipment bays.
  • Maintain accurate, real-time records of all work orders, PM history, and training documentation in Torus's CMMS and LMS tools.
  • Serve as a safety role model and positive technical influence for the maintenance team.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned by management.

  • Deep knowledge of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols; ability to develop, train on, and enforce LOTO procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) principles.
  • Strong math, time-management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure and clear decision-making during high-stress machine-down situations.
