About the role
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Buils effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
- Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
- Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.
- Reports damaged equipment.
- Reports to duty 10 minutes before shift and secures a substitute if necessary and with proper notification.
Qualifications
- Minimum age of 16 years old
- Required Certifications: YMCA approved basic life saving to include CPR, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen administration
- Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent
- Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
- Demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards

- Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor aquatic environment.
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
- Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
- Visual acuity is required to see and observe all sections of assigned zone or area of responsibility.
- Must be able to see and recognize aquatic distress above and below the water surface.
- Ability to respond properly to medical emergency is necessary.
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods at a time are required, as well as the ability to hold breath under water when necessary.
