SVP, Banker Development Program & Underwriting Manager
About the role
Susser Bank, a rapidly growing, entrepreneurial Texas regional bank, is seeking a seasoned credit professional with deep experience in both Commercial and Industrial (C&I) lending and Commercial Real Estate (CRE). This high-impact role is based at the Bank's Old Parkland headquarters in Dallas, on a collaborative credit team focused on complex middle-market credits across Texas.
Reporting to the SVP, Credit Manager, the SVP, Banker Development Program & Underwriting Manager owns Susser Bank's existing Banker Development Program and is charged with elevating it into a best-in-class talent engine for building the next generation of Susser Bank commercial bankers. The successful candidate will assess, strengthen, and expand the in-place program's curriculum, structure, and outcomes, while supporting the credit team's workflow across the Bank's footprint.
Responsibilities
- Banker Development Program – Ownership and Continuous Improvement
- Lead day-to-day operations of Susser Bank's existing Banker Development Program with a mandate to assess, strengthen, and continuously improve every element of the program—curriculum, structure, delivery, mentorship, and outcomes.
- Conduct a comprehensive review of the current program; identify gaps against best-in-class bank credit training programs and develop and execute a multi-year enhancement roadmap in partnership with the SVP, Credit Manager and executive leadership.
- Refresh and expand the existing curriculum to include accounting fundamentals, financial statement and cash flow analysis, credit write-up preparation, loan structuring, covenant design, collateral valuation, C&I and CRE underwriting, risk rating, loan documentation, credit policy, and relationship management skills.
- Personally deliver classroom-style instruction and case-study training, and upgrade training materials, case studies, and live-deal assignments using real Susser Bank credits.
- Strengthen the program's rotation framework to deepen participant exposure to underwriting, portfolio management, loan operations, treasury management, and line-of-business teams across the Bank's footprint.
- Enhance the mentorship component by formalizing pairings with seasoned lenders and credit officers, and expanding participant networking and exposure to key executives.
- Directly manage, coach, and evaluate program participants; set performance expectations, deliver structured feedback, and prepare formal performance assessments.
- Sharpen graduation standards and placement paths from analyst into portfolio manager, relationship manager, and credit officer career tracks.
- Establish and track program metrics (retention, time-to-productivity, credit quality of participant work, placement outcomes, participant and manager feedback) and report results and improvement plans to executive management.
- Partner with Human Resources and executive leadership on campus and experienced-hire recruiting; improve candidate sourcing, evaluation, and selection processes.
- Credit Workflow Management and Credit Quality
- Manage credit workflow across the Bank's footprint, including assignment, prioritization, and quality control of underwriting requests, renewals, and annual reviews performed by program participants.
- Review credit write-ups, risk ratings, and financial spreads prepared by program participants prior to submission to credit approvers, using the review process as a hands-on teaching tool.
- Serve as a senior credit resource on complex middle-market C&I and CRE transactions, providing independent analysis and guidance on underwriting, structuring, covenants, collateral, and repayment capacity.
- Promote, enhance, and reinforce the Bank's credit culture; act in an advisory role to program participants, lenders, and analysts on matters of credit policy, compliance, and regulation.
- Identify opportunities to improve credit processes, templates, technology utilization, and workflow efficiency, and incorporate those improvements into program training.
- Support regulatory examinations, internal/external loan review, and audit activities as needed.
