About the role
The Underwriter will analyze, conduct due diligence, and underwrite new loan requests for both new and existing clients across various industries. This position involves structuring complex credit requests, performing independent credit analysis, and preparing detailed credit approval recommendation (CAR) reports.
Responsibilities
- Independently evaluate and structure complex credit requests for businesses in C&I, investor real estate, and other specialty industries.
- Perform independent credit analysis and risk assessment, including analyzing financial statements, tax returns, and real estate schedules.
- Develop a thorough understanding of the applicant's business, market, and management capabilities.
- Evaluate complex corporate structures and recommend optimal borrowing structures to protect the bank.
- Draft and negotiate loan documents prepared by outside law firms or in-house counsel.
- Create and submit CAR reports for approval by Credit Administration.
- Review and oversee Letter of Interest (LOI) consistency with loan documents and CAR.
- Assist with loan administration, including timely boarding and funding of loan requests.
- Identify and document new loans' Risk Ratings accurately.
- Stay updated on industry-related, political, and regulatory issues affecting specific industries or clients.
- Engage with internal and external credit review teams and regulators as needed.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior Underwriters on more complex transactions.
- Review junior Underwriters' work and communicate findings.
- Involvement in interviewing and hiring decisions.
- Prepare and deliver employee performance evaluations, goal planning, and counseling.
- Manage, support, coach, and train employees.
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of underwriting experience in real estate, construction, and commercial financing, including valuation and asset management.
- Experience underwriting corporate asset finance type loans, such as aviation, rail/marine, and equipment leasing.
- Proficiency in PC applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Moody's.
- Excellent composing and writing skills.
- Effective verbal communication skills with a wide range of people.
- Responsiveness, judgment, maturity, integrity, and strong time management skills.
- Ability to work independently, multi-task, adapt to change, handle pressure, and meet deadlines.
- Strong financial analytical skills, including evaluating complex financial statements and complicated business and personal tax returns.
- Proficiency with nCino.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree and/or relevant work experience or training.
- Experience underwriting corporate asset finance type loans, such as aviation, rail/marine, and equipment leasing.
