Surveying Technician / Inspector I

Essential Functions And Responsibilities

  • Place and hold measuring tapes when electronic distance-measuring equipment
  • Position and hold the vertical rods, or targets, that theodolite operators use for sighting in-order-to measure angles, distances, and elevations
  • Record survey measurements and descriptive data, using notes, drawings, sketches, and inked tracings
  • Run rods for benches and cross-section elevations
  • Search for section corners, property irons, and survey points
  • Set out and recover stakes, marks, and other monumentation
  • Adjust and operate surveying instruments such as prisms, theodolites, and electronic distance-measuring equipment
  • Compile information necessary to stake projects for construction, using engineering plans
  • Conduct surveys using electronic distance-measuring equipment and other surveying instruments
  • Maintain equipment and vehicles used by surveying crews
  • Perform manual labor, such as cutting brush for lines, carrying stakes, rebar, and other heavy items, and stacking rods

Required Skills

  • Experience with Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD) is a plus but not required for hire
  • Accurate data entry skills
  • Ability to operate and master various electronic devices and software programs as needed for surveying and mapping
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and oral instructions
  • To solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening
  • Able to pass Background Check

Required Experience

  • Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience in heavy construction
  • Valid Driver’s License

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in the field 90% of the time
  • Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed
  • Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions
  • The employee may be required to hike into remote areas or work in heavily congested and populated areas
  • Work is performed within a general office environment 10% of the time
  • Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking
  • Lights and temperatures are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment
  • Anticipated travel 20% of the time
