Survey Project Manager
Position Summary
The Survey Project Manager is responsible for the leadership, coordination, and successful delivery of land surveying projects from initiation through completion. This role oversees field and office survey teams, ensuring accurate data collection, efficient processing, and high-quality deliverables that meet client requirements, regulatory standards, and company expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage multiple land surveying projects, ensuring timely delivery, budget adherence, and quality control
Coordinate daily activities of field crews, survey technicians, and CADD staff to support efficient project execution
Review survey data, plats, legal descriptions, and mapping deliverables for accuracy and completeness
Prepare and manage proposals, scopes of work, schedules, and project budgets
Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement solutions to maintain productivity and profitability
Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, maintaining strong relationships and clear communication throughout project lifecycles
Provide technical oversight on boundary analysis, control networks, construction staking, and topographic mapping
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as industry standards (including ALTA/NSPS requirements where applicable)
Mentor and develop survey staff, promoting professional growth and technical excellence
Collaborate with internal teams and leadership to support business development and expand client relationships
Review and approve final deliverables requiring professional authorization
Knowledge & Skills
Technical Knowledge: Land surveying principles including boundary, topographic, and construction surveys Interpretation of plats, deeds, easements, and legal descriptions Familiarity with Virginia surveying standards and applicable regulations Working knowledge of survey technologies such as GNSS, robotic total stations, and data collectors
Software Proficiency: AutoCAD Civil 3D Trimble Business Center (TBC) or similar processing software Microsoft Office Suite Core Skills: Strong leadership and team management abilities Effective verbal and written communication Project planning, budgeting, and resource allocation Problemsolving and decisionmaking in dynamic field and office environments
Minimum Qualifications
Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license preferred (Virginia or ability to obtain)
5+ years of progressive experience in land surveying, including project management or team leadership
Proven experience managing survey projects from field data collection through final deliverables
Travel Requirements
Up to 20% travel, including occasional overnight stays, depending on project needs and workshare between offices
Additional Requirements
Valid driver’s license required
Ability to obtain access to secure facilities (e.g., military bases) as needed
Ability to work in outdoor environments and navigate active construction sites and varied terrain
Ability to lift and carry equipment (up to 50 lbs occasionally)
