Survey Instrument Operator
About the Role
We are seeking a survey field crew member to assist the Crew Chief with the collection of survey data to produce accurate surveys in a timely manner. This role involves outdoor work in various weather conditions and requires physical stamina to handle surveying equipment.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the operation of survey instruments, such as total stations, GPS receivers, levels, and data collectors under the supervision of a survey crew chief or surveyor.
- Set up survey instruments according to instructions provided by the survey crew chief or surveyor.
- Perform routine maintenance and basic cleaning of surveying instruments.
- Support the crew chief or surveyor in conducting field surveys including topographic surveys, boundary surveys, and construction layout surveys.
- Assist in the establishment of survey control points and marks.
- Participate in the collection of survey data, including measurements, ratings, and observations.
- Record accurate field measurements and other relevant survey data; assist in entering survey data into data collectors or designated devices.
- Cut and clear brush from survey lines, load and unload equipment required for the survey.
- Assist in determining elevations and laying out stakes, marking points of measurement with elevation, station number, or other marks.
- Place stakes at designated points and specified elevations, and measure between points.
- Assist in the setup, maintenance, and care of surveying instruments, equipment, and tools.
- Report any equipment issues or needs to the survey crew chief or surveyor.
- Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Participate in safety meetings and training sessions to maintain safe work practices.
- Report any safety concerns or hazards to the survey crew chief or surveyor.
- Actively learn and develop surveying skills and knowledge under the guidance of the survey crew chief or surveyor.
- Collaborate with the survey crew chief or surveyor to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain organized records of field data and assist in data management processes.
- Follow proper procedures for the cleaning, storage, and transportation of equipment.
- Seek opportunities to enhance understanding of surveying principles, techniques, and equipment.
- Participate in training and development activities as directed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2 years of experience in surveying and/or data collection or related field experience is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Basic knowledge of surveying principles, techniques, and equipment is advantageous.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Physical stamina and ability to carry and operate surveying equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
