Surgical Technology Program Director/Full Time Faculty

About the Role

This position serves as both a full-time faculty member and the Program Director for the Surgical Technology program at NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC). As Program Director, some teaching duties will be released to perform administrative responsibilities, including curriculum development, faculty supervision, program accreditation, and compliance with regulatory standards. The Program Director oversees student recruitment and retention, clinical placement partnerships, and program evaluation. Administrative release time is subject to change based on program growth and faculty hiring.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate student learning, provide effective instruction, and evaluate student performance using standard course outlines.
• Teach a standard load of 15 credit hours per semester (or 42 annually for 12-month appointments), with potential adjustments for administrative duties.
• Develop course curriculum, handouts, lectures, labs, and presentations.
• Participate in program-level learning assessment, including defining outcomes, administering measures, and suggesting improvements.
• Collaborate on program curriculum, standards, and policies, including textbook selection.
• Schedule, supervise, and evaluate students in clinical, internship, or field experience settings.
• Maintain availability for student meetings, clearly communicated via course syllabi.
• Assign grades, maintain records in compliance with FERPA, and submit them by deadlines.
• Attend all scheduled classes, office hours, and meetings; notify supervisors of absences.
• Teach courses via alternative delivery methods, including evenings, weekends, or off-site locations in Benton/Washington Counties.
• Tutor students across multiple locations and schedules (day, evening, weekend).
• Attend departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings.
• Engage in professional development, including staying current in the discipline, attending conferences, and maintaining certifications.
• Participate in college professional development activities and faculty evaluation processes.
• Serve on committees, advisory boards, hiring committees, or faculty senate (broadly defined as service to the college).
• Attend discipline-related meetings at local, regional, state, or national levels.
• Mentor new faculty and serve as a liaison for Early College Experience faculty.
• Attend commencement and other discipline-appropriate ceremonies.
• Perform other academically related duties as assigned by supervisors.
• Participate in community and educational activities to promote the college, programs, and students/graduates (unless compensated separately).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Surgical Technologist Certification.
• Graduation from a surgical technology education program accredited by a nationally recognized agency.
• Credential in surgical technology through an NCCA-accredited national certification program.
• Minimum of five years of experience in the operating room scrub role, as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both within the past ten years.
• Documented education or experience in instructional methodology, curriculum design, and program planning.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years of teaching experience.
• Program Director experience in a surgical technology program.

Physical Demands

The role requires frequent manipulation of items (e.g., keyboarding), sitting, standing, walking, hearing, repetitive motion, and talking. Work Environment

The position primarily operates in a professional office setting with moderate noise levels (e.g., conversations, office equipment). Lighting and temperature are controlled. Occasional visits to other areas (e.g., storage rooms, outdoor locations) may involve varied environmental conditions or light physical activity.
