Surgical Technologist II (CST)

Full-time, day shift position.

About the role

The surgical technologist prepares the operating room for surgical cases of all specialties and instruments the surgical procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgeon. This role provides care within MercyOne North Iowa Standards of Care, AORN Standards of Care and Practice, and the Operating Room Policies and Procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assists the circulating nurse in assessing patients' needs and helps develop and implement the plan of care.
• Provides care to all surgical patients in accordance with operating room performance standards, physician preference cards, and AORN Standards of Care and Practice.
• Assists in setting up rooms, secures safe transport of the patient if needed, and confirms correctness of the surgical site.
• Prepares the pre-operative site, instruments the case, manages the sterile field and specimens, and turns the room around under the supervision of the circulating nurse.
• Serves as a steward for the hospital’s human and material resources, meeting productivity expectations as defined by the unit manager.
• Identifies accurate changes on surgeons' preference cards and utilizes/maintains appropriate supplies during cases and in the department.
• Develops and maintains knowledge/skills in all surgical specialties.

Requirements

• Graduate of a surgical technologist program or graduate of an LPN program with surgical experience.
• Certification as a surgical technologist required.
• LPN license required if graduate of an LPN program.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience functioning as a Surgical Tech.
• Proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer—LIVE class only) required prior to employment or within 60 days of hire.
• Proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training required prior to employment or within 6 months of hire.

Schedule

• Day shift: 8-hour shifts available, will consider 10-hour shifts.
• Call every 4th weekend or as needed by the department.
