Surgical Technologist

About the Role

Assists surgeons throughout surgery as a member of the surgical team. Duties include anticipating the surgeon's needs for procedures and instruments, maintaining sterility, and transporting patients.

Responsibilities

  • Anticipate the surgeon's needs for procedures and instruments.
  • Maintain sterility during surgical procedures.
  • Transport patients as required.
  • Operate and set up surgical equipment and instruments.
  • Restock the operating room.
  • Identify patient emergency situations and institute proper response procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals under stressful conditions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Graduation from an accredited program for surgical technologists or completion of a training program administered by the United States Public Health Service, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification accepted by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Qualifications

Preferences will be given to applicants who document the following:

  • Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the past five (5) years) acute care surgical tech experience in the following areas: OR, PACU, ASU, or Trauma.
  • Ability and flexibility to work days, evenings, night shifts, and/or weekends as required by the department.

Skills

Knowledge Of:

  • Anatomy and physiology.
  • Microbiology and pharmacology.
  • Medical-legal considerations involved in patient care.
  • Infection control and sterilization procedures.
  • Surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Methods for draping patients.
  • Proper lifting techniques and body mechanics.
  • Variety of surgical techniques and equipment (video systems, lithotripter (ESWL & EHL), YAG, carbon dioxide lasers, and x-rays).
  • Department and hospital safety practices and procedures.
  • Patient rights and age-specific patient care practices.
  • Infection control policies and procedures.
  • Handling, storage, use, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.

Skill In:

  • Operating room procedures.
  • Setting up and restocking the operating room.
  • Performing surgical procedures.
  • Identifying and responding to patient emergency situations.
  • Communicating with diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Efficient, effective, and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment.
  • Stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Strength to examine varied patients.
  • Vision to read printed materials and VDT screens.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person and over the telephone.
  • Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
