Surgical Technician
Department Job Description Summary
Assists in positioning and transferring of patients.
Prepares, maintains, and monitors sterile set-up.
Disposes of linen, gloves, and sharps in appropriate containers.
Transports instruments in appropriate manner to decontamination area.
Prior to case, checks function of equipment and instruments.
Affirms maintenance of sterile field until dressings are applied, x-rays are taken, or patient is out of the room.
Points out break in sterile technique of self and/or team members to the RN circulator immediately.
Handles contaminated items in appropriate manner by placing them in red bags or linen bin.
Replaces equipment and supplies used intra-operatively ensuring that they are in good working order.
Ensures completeness of instrument trays before and after a case.
Removes all instruments from sterile drape.
Demonstrates knowledge of proper care and handling of specialty instruments.
Establishes and maintains a neutral zone when passing sharps on the sterile field to prevent injury/exposure to self and others.
Adheres to personal protective equipment protocol at all times.
Wears eye protection when scrubbed at the field.
Identifies and labels all medication on back table.
Inspects sterile packages, containers, and trays for integrity prior to placing on sterile field.
Inspects all sterile trays for indicator changes prior to placing on sterile field.
Checks case supplies according to surgeon's preference list.
Maintains current CPR status.
Aids surgical service assistants with room turnover by disposing of surgical debris in biohazard bags.
Facilitates and monitors patient safety by providing a safe environment.
Removes and puts away unused supplies and sutures after each use.
Reports broken equipment/instruments to charge nurse of the service and the core desk.
Demonstrates competence and specializes in at least 1 major service, demonstrating competency, willingness, and flexibility to work in other services as requested.
Serves as preceptor as requested.
Qualifications
- CPR Certification required and Surgical Technician Certification preferred.
- Education: HS Diploma. Graduate from accredited surgical technologist program required.
- Experience: 3-5 years of experience as a surgical technologist or related experience (i.e. sterile processing). Certification preferred.
