Surgical Tech, Part-Time Main OR

Responsibilities

• Assist the surgical team as the primary scrub person, handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures.
• Provide safe patient care by verifying patient identification and ensuring the presence of necessary instrumentation, supplies, equipment, and implants.
• Adhere to aseptic practices to protect patients from injury, minimize wound contamination, and reduce patient risk for surgical site infection.
• Demonstrate problem-solving ability related to the procedure and respond appropriately to emergencies or changes in procedure.
• Demonstrate attention to detail and anticipate the surgeon’s needs when scrubbed on any surgical procedure.
• Assume responsibility for accurate sponge, sharp, and instrument counts, correct medication labeling on the sterile field, and correct handling and labeling of specimens.
• Cross-train and rotate to other clinical areas in Perioperative Services as needed.

Qualifications

Must meet one or more of the following requirements in compliance with CT regulations:

• Successfully completed a nationally accredited surgical technology program and holds and maintains certification as a surgical technologist (certification must be within 6 months of hire date) from a national certifying body recognized by the Department of Public Health.
• Successfully completed an accredited surgical technologist program but has not yet obtained certification, provided certification is obtained within 18 months of program completion or 6 months from the date of hire.
• Performed surgical technology services as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility on or before October 1, 2023, with proof of prior experience provided to the Department of Public Health upon request.
• Successfully completed a training program for surgical technology in the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard, or U.S. Public Health Services.
• Designated by the healthcare facility as competent to perform surgical technology services based on specialized training or specific experience (e.g., phlebotomist, nuclear medical technologist, ultrasound technologist, or central service technician).

Nothing in this section prohibits a person from performing surgical technology services if acting within the scope of their license, certification, registration, permit, or designation, or if they are a student or intern under the direct supervision of a healthcare provider.
