About the role
Assists the surgical team to provide patient care for assigned patients under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Demonstrates increasing knowledge of physical and technical requirements of surgical intervention, including moderately complex procedures and specialty instrumentation. Exhibits proficiency in scrubbing multiple surgical specialties, assists the circulator, and maintains effective communication skills. Participates in monitoring and maintaining department resources while contributing to the vision, mission, and goals of the department.
Responsibilities
- Assist the surgical team before, during, and after surgery.
- Participate in “time-out” and follow Universal Protocol Policy.
- Place equipment and supplies in the operating room and arrange instruments according to preference cards.
- Hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon, hold retractors, cut sutures, and perform other technical tasks as directed during operation.
- Identify problems or concerns on the nursing unit and assist in developing resolutions in a positive, constructive manner.
- Contribute positively to the morale of the unit, section, or department.
- Participate in performance improvement teams and activities.
- Demonstrate ability to provide appropriate care to patients of all ages.
- Anticipate supplies and equipment needed by utilizing the surgeon’s preference card.
- Understand and demonstrate principles of asepsis; use sterile technique when opening supplies and throughout procedures.
- Review anatomy and physiology relevant to procedures.
- Review operation of needed equipment for procedures.
- Assist with proper positioning of the patient.
- Demonstrate intra-operative knowledge and ability.
- Keep accurate count of needles, sharps, and instruments according to policy.
- Use proper technique for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and draping.
- Organize in preparation for the end of the case and assist in clean-up and turnover of rooms.
- Dispose of all sharps and biohazardous waste items appropriately.
- Handle specimens properly.
- Demonstrate knowledge of principles and proper use of various sterilization types and document cycles appropriately.
- Report equipment malfunctions to the manager.
- Use time management and flexibility in organizing and prioritizing workload to provide optimal service to the department and network.
Level 2 – Proficient (in addition to above duties)
- Serve as a preceptor or mentor for students and staff, as appropriate.
- Act as a resource to promote surgical technology within Carondelet.
- Participate in hospital safety and emergency programs.
- Direct the practice of support staff to achieve the patient’s functional goals.
- Cooperate with faculty of affiliated schools or health programs to assist in providing an optimum learning environment for students.
Level 3 – Subject Matter Expert (in addition to above duties)
- Participate in performance improvement teams and quality improvement measures within the department.
- Provide input to the department Manager or Director in coordinating ongoing treatment plans and progress.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience: Knowledge of principles of asepsis; ability to scrub more than two specialties proficiently.
- Skills: Effective interpersonal skills, team building, problem-solving, critical thinking, coaching, and mentoring.
- Licensure/Certifications: BLS (Basic Life Support).
Preferred Requirements
- Experience: Knowledge of hospital environment; previous hospital or healthcare-related experience.
- Licensure/Certifications: Successful completion of a Surgical Technologists course from an accredited facility.
