Surgical Services RN-Registered Nurse
About the role
The Registered Nurse position at MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center is part-time and operates on a rotating shift schedule. This role is essential for providing safe, effective, and culturally competent care for patients with acute medical and surgical conditions.
Responsibilities
- Conducts an initial assessment to gather data and completes an admission assessment database within 24 hours of admission.
- Identifies patient problems and develops them into an outcome/goal-based plan of care.
- Prioritizes patient care needs and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members.
- Coordinates care provided by LPNs, Patient Care Assistants, and other nursing team members.
- Facilitates communication with physicians, patients, and families, and educates patients and families on their health needs.
- Delegates tasks appropriately to other team members and implements the plan of care, including procedures, treatments, and medications.
- Coordinates implementation of the plan of care with the Case Manager, Social Worker, and other health care disciplines.
- Assists in decreasing the patient’s length of stay by helping the patient and family identify and secure appropriate services to satisfy health-related needs upon discharge.
- Evaluates patient progress and revises the outcome/goal-based plan as needed.
- Maintains ongoing communication with interdisciplinary team members throughout the shift, at shift change, and transfer of care.
- Documents completely, comprehensively, and legibly and in accordance with policy.
- Demonstrates clinical competence and utilizes Patient Care Policies and Procedures as references to guide nursing practice.
- Prioritizes and implements interventions according to patient assessment.
- Manages telemetry and cardiac monitoring when applicable.
- Recognizes and responds appropriately to cardiac arrhythmias and other changes in patient condition.
Requirements
- Associate degree in nursing required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Current Iowa RN license.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required only if the unit has telemetry monitoring capabilities.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
- High language, intermediate to high math, and high critical thinking ability.
- Basic computer skills required.
Qualifications
- Must be capable of managing multiple patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring.
- May be required to assist with data collection and quality improvement initiatives.
- Willingness to serve as a resource to other hospital services (nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, respiratory, etc.) and participation in unit-based committees and education of nursing staff as requested.
Skills
- Competency in computer systems and applications required for role.
- Ability to manage multiple patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring.
- Willingness to assist with data collection and quality improvement initiatives.
- Ability to serve as a resource to other hospital services and participate in unit-based committees and education of nursing staff as requested.

Schedule
PRN schedule - Nurses have the ability for self-scheduling. 208 hours annually including twelve (12) weekend shifts, 2 holidays (1 winter/ 1 summer).
