About the role

The surgical coordinator will serve as a counselor/educator for patients scheduling surgery and additional physician appointments, operating within the framework of the office and corporate policies and procedures of the department.

Computer software utilized: Nextgen, Centricity, and Healthspan.

Responsibilities

  • Act as liaison between physicians, patients, hospitals, SurgiCenter, Eastern Radiology, and any other entity where surgery is performed.
  • Schedule and coordinate referrals to offices both inside and outside of Physicians East.
  • Schedule all surgeries, referral appointments, and post-op appointments.
  • Answer calls for the department and schedule appointments.
  • Maintain courteous and helpful telephone communication.
  • Educate patients regarding pre-operative instructions and consents.
  • Inform the surgery facility of any special needs of the patient.
  • Prepare pre-op papers for patients to take to the facility at pre-op visits prior to surgery.
  • Send surgery patients to the appropriate facility for chest x-ray, EKG, and blood work.
  • Cancel and reschedule surgery as needed.
  • Post surgical cases with the hospital and surgical center using Healthspan.
  • Coordinate and notify physicians of the surgery schedule.
  • Participate in in-service education, staff meetings, and other continuing education programs to maintain optimal technical knowledge.
  • Attend safety classes and compliance training as offered by Physicians East, P.A.
  • Work as a contributing team member to keep departments running smoothly.
  • Perform other tasks as needed or required.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required; Associate Degree preferred.
  • Experience in a medical office environment is required.
  • Strong computer experience.
  • Strong sense of team commitment, including meeting deadlines, punctuality, and excellent follow-through and feedback.
  • High level of confidentiality, integrity, and initiative.
  • Ability to form positive and collaborative relationships with peers and physicians at all levels within the company.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to create a favorable impression for the organization to all staff, patients, and the public.

Schedule

Full-time, part-time, temporary, or PRN role based at our Greenville location. Schedule is Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Overtime may be required to ensure patient care, task completion, and timely call returns. Weekend work is rare but occasionally necessary.

Typical Physical Demands

  • Work requires sitting for long periods of time; some stooping, bending, and stretching may be required.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, telephone, fax machine, and other office equipment.
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 and hearing within normal range for telephone contacts.

Typical Working Conditions

Work is performed in a high-volume office environment, which can be stressful at times. Involves frequent communication with patients, staff members, and other medical facilities.
