Surface Preparation/Mechanical Services Technicians

Position Summary

MISTRAS is seeking dependable, safety‑focused Surface Preparation / Mechanical Services Technicians to support industrial nondestructive testing (NDT/NDE) operations. The primary responsibility is to prepare piping welds and adjacent base material for NDT inspection by operating handheld angle grinders and other mechanical surface‑preparation tools to remove coatings, paint, rust, scale, weld spatter, and other debris that may interfere with inspection activities. This role works closely with NDT technicians and site personnel to ensure inspection areas are properly prepared while maintaining the integrity of the weld and surrounding material. NDT certification is not required.

Responsibilities

• Operate handheld angle grinders and other mechanical tools to clean and prepare welds and surrounding material for NDT inspection.
• Remove coatings, paint, rust, scale, weld spatter, and other surface debris that could interfere with inspection.
• Coordinate with NDT technicians and site personnel to verify that preparation meets inspection requirements.
• Maintain the integrity of welds and adjacent base material during preparation work.
• Provide mechanical surface‑preparation support to qualified NDT personnel.

Working Conditions

• Field duties require outdoor work in plant or shop environments, often around production machinery with extreme noise levels.
• May be assigned to more than one job site daily and must tolerate changes in climate.
• Periodic out‑of‑town travel may be required.
• Must wear required safety equipment for personal protection as dictated by the safety department.

Essential Physical Functions

• Frequent lifting and carrying of up to 50 pounds.
