Responsibilities

  • Department Focus
    • Identifies and allocates environmental, technical, personnel resources needed to meet the needs of the operation room and colleagues.
    • Participates in quality assessment and improvement programs to evaluate the effectiveness of care delivered.
    • Enhances unit behaviors through encouragement of education, implementation of new concepts and technology.
    • Provides leadership in the development of policies, procedures, standards of care, and critical paths to promote positive patient outcomes.
  • Human Resource Management
    • Documents and communicates staff performance with recommendations for quality and growth.
    • Interdisciplinary collaboration to foster staff development.
    • Develops unit staffing schedule to provide a fiscally sound and safe staffing pattern which meets patient and family needs and expectations.
    • Conducts informational staff meetings to provide a positive environment conducive to change and progress in the healthcare field.
    • Identifies staff educational needs and works with the Clinical Manager and Unit Teacher to promote learning.
    • Identifies and resolves nursing care conflicts related to the unit.
    • Contributes to unit staff appraisals and developmental goals.
    • Aids in the credentialing process and assesses compliance to unit standards.
    • Collaborates with Nursing Faculty and students to meet educational needs.
    • Respects Rhode Island Hospital policies, procedures, including union contracts and standards of practice.
    • Participates in staff recruitment and retention.
    • Assists in the credentialing process and assesses compliance to unit standards.
    • Collaborates with Nursing Faculty and students to meet educational needs.
    • Participates in the formation of policy, procedures, standards.
    • Participates on organizational committees.
    • Complies with JCAHO standards.
  • Financial Management
    • Develops critical path development and utilization that provides quality cost-efficient guidance to patient care.
    • Encourages financial conscientious staff to participate in the development of cost-effective ideas and plans.
    • Aids in the development of capital and operational budgets defined for the unit.
    • Encourages staff to develop and implement new concepts and technology into nursing practice.
    • Develops unit staffing and scheduling to maximize personnel talent and potential.
    • Maintains staff compliance to schedule through weekly payroll.
  • Departmental/Organizational Support
    • Provides unit management coverage in collaboration with the Clinical Manager.
    • Directs and supervises unit staff.
    • Identifies and resolves conflict and problems related to the unit.
    • Communicates the status of unit operations, activities, and issues to the Clinical Manager or appropriate discipline.
    • Participates in unit management meetings and recommends fiscal/patient care objectives, standards, and goals.
    • Chairs unit staff meetings in collaboration with the Clinical Manager.
    • Collaborates with nursing faculty to facilitate students to meet educational needs.
    • Participates in the formation of policy, procedures, standards.
    • Participates on organizational committees.
    • Complies with JCAHO standards.
  • Clinical Practice Management/Development
    • Remains current on the latest concepts, techniques, and methods relative to areas of responsibility.
    • Demonstrates flexibility and recognizes the needs for the overall organization.
    • Participates in professional organizations.

    Qualifications

    • Education: Must have current licensure to practice as a Certified Sterile Processing Technician. CRCST or equivalent required.
    • Experience: Minimum of 3 years relevant experience with demonstrated clinical and leadership skills. Maintains mandatory skills; remains current in practice and technology; as an active member of IAHCSMM.
    • Supervisory Responsibility: Supervisory responsibility for up to 50 FTEs.
