Supply Chain and Logistics Trainee - Transportation
About the Role
Penske’s Logistics Trainee Program is a management trainee experience designed for individuals interested in supply chain careers, logistics operations, and leadership development. This structured program provides hands-on training across multiple logistics functions and prepares you for future leadership roles within Penske Logistics. You will work on improving service delivery to customers while learning processes, policies, and procedures in a collaborative environment. The program offers exposure to top-tier technologies, teamwork, and opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement.
The program lasts approximately 9-12 months, starting on the first of the month, and is based in Faribault, MN. You must be able to commute daily and be open to relocation after completion. Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared to lead a small team in a dedicated contract carriage operation.
Responsibilities
- Oversee logistics operations, including customer service, freight loading/unloading, dispatch, and documentation control.
- Manage driver deliveries, trailer loading/unloading, cross-docking, and customer service operations while meeting cost objectives.
- Lead a small group of hourly associates, ensuring they are motivated, trained, and aligned with customer business objectives.
- Foster a safe work environment by complying with and administering safety and operational procedures.
- Understand and exceed location-specific customer goals and objectives.
- Resolve operational issues and monitor compliance using organizational and time management skills.
- Learn and implement the Kaizen methodology and Lean processes.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to work methods to increase productivity in dispatch operations.
- Plan work assignments to optimize fleet and equipment usage.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required (Business, Supply Chain, Data Science/Analytics, or related field preferred).
- Demonstrated leadership experience through academic, community, organizational, or military involvement.
- Authorized to work in the United States (visa sponsorship is not available for these positions).
- Willingness to relocate based on business needs or upon program completion.
- Internship or related work experience in a customer-facing role is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to learn and navigate various technology platforms.
- Commitment to learning, growth, and receptiveness to feedback.
- High level of commitment to operational and job responsibilities.
- Results-oriented with strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships at all levels.
- Regular, predictable, full attendance is essential.
- Willingness to travel as necessary and work the required schedule at the specified location.
Physical Requirements
The physical and mental demands include:
- Reading, verbal/written communication, and analyzing information.
- Remembering and understanding instructions or guidelines.
- Standing, walking, sitting, and frequent use of hands to touch, handle, or feel.
- Occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 25 lbs./12 kg.
- Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Pay
$25.00 per hour with an average annual earnings of $55,000 (including overtime).
