About the role
Responsible for development and oversight of fitness programming for active and retired military, authorized civilians, contractors, and dependents at one or more facilities. The program includes personal training, group exercise, fitness, and the Navy physical readiness program.
Responsibilities
- Directs work to be accomplished by staff, assigns tasks based on priorities, difficulty, and staff capabilities.
- Conducts annual performance reviews of staff and participates in staffing decisions.
- Ensures staff receives proper training and addresses disciplinary or performance issues as needed.
- Assists in planning and implementing a comprehensive fitness program, including personal training, group exercise, and fitness assessments.
- Provides guidance to Fitness Center staff in the absence of the Fitness Director.
- Plans, organizes, and conducts fitness conditioning sessions, clinics, or seminars for patrons.
- Ensures Sports Specialists (fitness) are trained and certified to lead Command physical training (PT), group exercise, and personnel training sessions.
- Provides guidance and recommendations on the Command Physical Readiness Program to installation Command Fitness Leaders (CFL) and conducts initial/refresher training for CFLs.
- Attends installation meetings related to the fitness program.
- Incorporates exercise, nutrition, and behavioral health education into the installation’s fitness program.
- Assists in conducting training clinics on topics such as the Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling System, aerobic/anaerobic conditioning, strength, endurance, flexibility, and nutrition.
- Coordinates repairs of fitness facility equipment and ensures compliance with posted rules and regulations.
- Serves as the subject matter expert on exercise science for the installation.
- Plans and coordinates recurring and non-recurring activities, special events, and joint community programs to maximize resource use.
- Assists in projecting income from fees and charges, monitors inventories, cost controls, and patron counts, and maintains records.
- Coordinates program efforts with other team members and works closely with MWR departmental personnel on scheduling and facility guidelines.
- Identifies target groups for co-sponsored programs and assists in developing publicity and marketing plans.
- Arranges for equipment, supplies, and services needed for programs and recommends improvements.
- Ensures program operations comply with sanitation, health, and safety regulations.
- Assists in implementing a safety/risk management plan and schedules First Aid/CPR training for personnel.
- Conducts regular safety inspections of facilities and reports concerns to supervisors.
- Prepares training manuals, conducts staff meetings, and provides clerical support, including program registration and public inquiries.
- Assists with reservations, contracts, and access lists for fitness, sports, and aquatics facilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must have salary sent to a financial institution via Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
- Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
- CPR and First Aid certifications are required; copies must be submitted with resume.
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid state driver’s license.
- Must obtain Blood-borne Pathogen Certification and Navy Basic Fitness Certification (if working in a fitness facility) within 90 days of hire.
Qualifications
While elements (a) through (c) are preferred, a combination of two of these elements may sufficiently qualify:
- A four-year degree in exercise science or a related field.
- Professional certification by an accredited health/fitness organization.
- At least three years of experience in the fitness industry/field.
CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are required.
