Supervisory Recreation Specialist (Assistant Aquatics Manager)

About the role

The Assistant Aquatics Manager oversees an extensive aquatics program serving approximately 75,000 patrons, including military, family members, retirees, and authorized civilians. Key responsibilities include conducting third- and second-class swim tests, Navy Swim Tester courses, American Red Cross Learn to Swim programs, lifeguard training, and water safety instructor courses.

Responsibilities

• Help Aquatic activities include but are not limited to: Third- and Second-Class Swim Test, Navy Swim Tester Course, American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program, Lifeguard Training, Head Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer, Automatic Defibrillation (AED), First Aid, Water Safety Instructor Courses, Hydro-Fit, Water Aerobics, Physical Readiness Training.
• Manage and direct the care and maintenance of aquatic facilities, adhering to BUPERSINST 1710.19 and NAVMED guidelines.
• Manage and direct the installation and disposal of equipment, ensuring its proper care and maintenance.
• Train staff on new equipment.
• Prepare briefings, letters of operation, standard operating procedures, special reports, management narratives, and after-action reports.
• Assist in preparing and executing APF/NAF budgets.
• Justify programs and activities including APF/NAF funding, personnel, facilities, supplies, and equipment.
• Analyze financial statements and justify significant variances between executed and projected results.
• Supervise cash handling operations, verifying patrons' payments through receipts, special interest groups, and activity pool rentals.
• Supervise and counsel civilian and military personnel assigned to the Aquatic Section.
• Develop performance standards, provide one-on-one performance evaluations, and nominate personnel for awards.

Requirements

• Pass all applicable records and background checks.
• Successfully pass E-Verify employment verification check.
• Frequent physical exertion while instructing or guiding participants in various activities.
• Frequent use of motorized vehicles to drive to various commands within the Northwest Region.

Qualifications

• Associates degree from an accredited college or university in recreation and aquatic education, or three (3) years of directly related aquatics recreation experience.
• Instructor Trainer in lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, AED, Blood Borne Pathogen Training; Navy Swim Tester, American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, and Water Safety Instructor.
• Aquatic Facilitator Operator (AFO) and Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) certified Water Aerobics Instructor.
• Knowledge of occupational safety, health, and environmental regulations relevant to managing and maintaining pools.
• Ability to coordinate large aquatics programs with community and civic leaders.
• Problem-solving skills to handle issues arising from managing diverse groups of people.
• Experience in financial management and budget processes.
• Personnel management and administration skills, including recruitment, selection, training, performance reviews, and leadership development.
• Extensive oral and written communication skills.
