Responsibilities

• Leading and coordinating the operations of a multidisciplinary outpatient mental health team with a focus on uninterrupted high-quality care to Veterans.
• Monitoring and ensuring compliance with hospital and mental health policies, regulations, executive orders and management directives.
• Collaborating with other teams/team leaders to improve communication and to ensure ongoing continuity of care for Veterans.
• Planning, organizing, and directing administrative, operational, patient and personnel activities for the team.
• Coordinating interdisciplinary staffing, work assignments, resource allocation and direct patient care.
• Providing comprehensive psychiatric medical care (assessment, consultation, treatment) with a focus on providing care to Veterans with addictions and substance use disorders.
• Providing diagnostic evaluations, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.
• Managing individuals with a broad range of clinical problems, including but not limited to substance use disorders, mood, anxiety and psychotic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and psychiatric disorders in the elderly Veteran population.
• Involvement in medical student, psychiatry resident, and addiction psychiatry fellow education.
• Administrative supervision, providing clinical supervision, and acting as collaborating physician for health care professionals such as Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.

Requirements

• Veterans served by the Gold Team tend to have serious and severe crises, be dually diagnosed, and have numerous psychosocial deficits. Treatment provided occurs through an outpatient clinic in Dallas (main campus), an outpatient opioid replacement program, and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
• VANTHCS MHS provides a full range of mental health services including general adult psychiatry, geriatrics, forensics, psychosomatic medicine, substance abuse sub-specialty services, trauma services, psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery programs, comprehensive homeless programs, peer support services, opiate replacement programs, Mental Health Intensive Case Management, vocational rehabilitation programs, domiciliary based programs and inpatient programs. There is ongoing active research in addiction psychiatry, post-traumatic stress disorder, disaster psychiatry, mood disorders, and homelessness.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Board eligibility or certification by ABPN or AOBNP.
• Addiction Psychiatry fellowship or board certification.
• Buprenorphine treatment experience.
• Methadone treatment experience.
• Experience and skill in conducting tele-mental health visits and managing related technology.
• Physical Requirements: The position requires compliance with VA Handbook and VASTHCS Policy related to physical requirements.
