Supervisory Police Officer (Operations).

About the role

Serve as the primary person responsible for the development, implementation, and execution of law enforcement programs, policies, and procedures under the direction of the Chief of Police.

Responsibilities

• Conduct long-range and day-to-day planning of operations of subordinate activities ensuring consideration of all assigned areas of responsibility.
• Recommend updates to policy letters, memorandums, and guidelines pertaining to the conduct and performance of assigned law enforcement activities.
• Maintain controls on all overtime worked in the unit.
• Take charge of crime and accident scenes and direct and oversee law enforcement operations.
• Attend meetings with directors, managers, and supervisors of other FHNY directorates/organizations on police operations and services required of the police force.
• Participate in investigations utilizing basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques for maintaining order and protecting life and property.
• Plan, direct, and review the activities of police officers; assign work to subordinate police officers; observe and evaluate their work performance.

Requirements

• Able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance.
• Subject to pre-employment drug screening and random testing thereafter, including testing based on reasonable suspicion and due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
• Designated as Mission Essential; required to report to work or remain at work during severe weather conditions or emergency situations to support mission operations.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state Motor Vehicle License and local government driver’s license.
• Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
• Must pass an annual Physical Ability Test (PAT) and perform essential functions of the position to standards published in AR 190-56.
• Subject to the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban (Lautenberg Amendment).
• Required to perform and pass semi-annual qualification testing with firearms and observe applicable safety precautions.
• Must obtain and maintain certifications for CPR/first aid techniques.
• Required to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing.
• Must successfully graduate from a United States Army Military Police School accredited Civilian Police or Security Guard Course within one year (unless waived per AR 190-56).
• Appointment subject to a one-year probationary period with limited appeal rights.
• Requires completion of a pre-employment and annual physical examination to ensure fitness for duty.
• Requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
• U.S. Citizenship required.

Qualifications

One year of specialized experience which includes:

• Planning, directing, and/or reviewing the activities of police officers;
• Assigning work to subordinate police officers;
• Observing and evaluating the work performance of police officers; and
• Participating in investigations using basic laws, regulations, and law enforcement practices.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the GS-09 level in the federal service. Education may not substitute for experience for this position.
