About the role

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the National Air and Space Museum's Preservation Restoration Unit (PRU)/Collections Department which is responsible for properly protecting the National Collections of Aeronautics and Space Artifacts using intellectual and physical controls.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for restoration and preservation planning after seeking advice and working closely with the technical experts of the PRU staff, the curators, and the Conservation Unit.
  • Train subordinates in all areas of preservation and restoration and is expected to accomplish this training and tasking independently.
  • Develop work schedules and assigns tasks based on an approved project schedule, taking into account the individual and team skills of the staff.
  • Initiate, review, and approve personnel actions to include: promotions, reassignments, performance plans and appraisals, and disciplinary actions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including administrative duties, such as creating budgets, resource requirements, project/task schedules, objectives/goals, staff/organizational planning, etc., in support of the unit. Also serves acts as a Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative as needed.
  • Keep the Chief, PRU and/or the Collections Dept. Chair informed of project status, independently resolving problems, and bringing unique issues to their attention.
  • Maintain a Bank Account for Direct Deposit/Electronic Transfer.

Requirements

Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. May be required to serve an 18-month probationary period for supervisors.

Qualifications

  • To qualify for the GS-12 based on experience: You must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience includes activities such as leading maintenance, preservation, and/or restoration projects of large aviation, space, or industrial objects to include:
  • Disassembling, assembling, cradling, or creating mounts for artifacts/aerospace equipment.
  • Moving, conserving, preserving, and restoring industrial objects.
  • Utilizing equipment such as forklifts, gantries, pallet jacks, dollies, and vehicles.
