About the role
You will consult with key officials of engineering, design, planning, training and production organizations concerning technical aspects of radiological and nuclear facility processes, radioactive waste disposal and maintenance work. You will prepare plans, specifications and process procedures for radiological and nuclear facility processes, radioactive waste characterization, processing and disposal shipments generated by maintenance-related work. You will review plans, engineered work documents and technical proposals of other organizations for proper radiological application. You will assist the Head, Radiological Engineering Division on radiological technical matters involving the initiation, improvement, evaluation and scheduling of major programs or projects undertaken by the division. You will recommend changes to the Head, Radiological Engineering Division relating to organization, function, responsibility and authority for various aspects of the radiological program at the branch level.

- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.
Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-12) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional engineer or health physicist developing plans, specifications and procedures for radiological and nuclear facilities work that includes reviewing plans and engineered work documents for proper radiological application.

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
Nuclear Engineer (0840 Occupational Series)
- Successful completion of a professional engineering degree that:
- leads to a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or
- includes differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials; and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics.
- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico; or
- Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board; or
- Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the specified courses; or
- Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology) plus at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
Health Physicist (1306 Occupational Series)
- Successful completion of a degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus; or
- Combination of education and experience in the areas above; or
- Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics.
