Duties
- Oversees daily operation of the section, ensuring that agency policies and priorities are followed, that all specimens are processed, assayed, and results verified and released in a timely and efficient manner.
- Gives advice, counsel, and instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters.
- Reviews and approves leave.
- Gives advice, counsel, and instruction to employees.
- Interviews candidates for positions within the section.
- Receives specimens into the laboratory area following all applicable policies and procedures.
- Verifies patient identification and specimen labeling prior to acceptance into the laboratory.
- Operates all equipment including, but not limited to, automation line, centrifuges, pneumatic tube system, dumbwaiter, and testing instrumentation.
- Processes samples as required for reference laboratory testing.
- Prepares shipping manifest as required for reference laboratory testing.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Are you proficient in basic written and spoken English?
- SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of this position. To be creditable - specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level. Specialized experience includes operating laboratory equipment including centrifuges, analyzers, and automation lines according to established procedures; applying knowledge of specimen requirements and processing procedures for in-house and send-out laboratory tests; creating or implementing staff development, education, and training; establishing and ensuring performance measures are met by employees. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit.
- EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: One and a half years of graduate education that is directly related to the work of this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school - 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
