About the role

Duties include directly supervising civilian employees and military personnel, directing the placement of equipment and personnel, and performing firefighting duties such as handling hose, rescue operations, and extinguishing fires. The role also involves ensuring personnel and equipment are ready for immediate response to firefighting and rescue operations, planning work, setting priorities, and preparing schedules.

Responsibilities

• Direct the placement of equipment, personnel, application of fire extinguishing agents and rescue personnel
• Perform firefighting duties such as handling hose, performing rescue operations, extinguishing fire, and performing as a HAZ/MAT team member
• Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency first aid as required
• Ensure that personnel and equipment are in a constant state of readiness for immediate response to firefighting and rescue operations
• Plan work to be accomplished, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work
• Assign work and/or crew assignment based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments and the capabilities of employees

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation
• Completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position
• Lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties
• Use personal protective equipment provided by the employer
• Wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty
• Possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles
• Successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test
• Signing of a DA Form 5019 acknowledging periodic random drug testing requirements is mandatory prior to being placed into this position

Qualifications

This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. To qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below.

• One year of specialized experience which includes:
  • Directing a crew in firefighting activities or in standby duty at the station
  • Performing or supervising fire hazard inspections in a variety of facilities
  • Responding to hazardous material incidents or providing preliminary medical care to victims
• Certifications required:
  • Airport Firefighter
  • Fire Instructor I
  • Fire Inspector I
  • HAZ/MAT Technician
  • Incident commander
  • Fire Officer II
  • EMT certification
  • NWCG FF II red card

Skills

Rigorous, heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs or more; may be required to lift/carry personnel such as an adult male in emergency situations. Duties require full use of both arms, both legs and fingers to bend, turn, pull, crawl, kneel, and climb for such tasks as use of aerial ladders, firefighting equipment controls, arranging/connecting hoses, rappelling, and operation of fire truck and all types of rescue operations, etc.
