About the role

Duties include directing daily fire department operations and emergency response activities, issuing operational guidance, and ensuring compliance with fire department procedures. The role also involves overseeing fire safety inspections, evaluating fire protection systems, leading personnel management activities, and serving as Deputy Fire Chief.

Responsibilities

  • Directs daily fire department operations and emergency response activities
  • Issues operational guidance and ensures compliance with fire department procedures
  • Oversees fire safety inspections and evaluates fire protection systems
  • Leads personnel management activities, including staffing, performance management, and employee development
  • Serves as Deputy Fire Chief and assumes command during Fire Chief’s absence

Requirements

  • Completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination
  • Ability to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties
  • Subject to a pre-employment screening and random testing for drugs
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License
  • Must obtain and maintain National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications
  • Participation in the Division Wellness Programs is required
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations.

  • One year of specialized experience which includes managing firefighting and fire protection operations, overseeing fire prevention and safety programs, and supervising firefighting personnel
  • Must possess specific certifications, including Fire Officer IV, Fire Instructor III, Fire Inspector II, Hazardous Material Operations, and Hazardous Material Incident Commander

Skills

The ideal candidate will have experience in firefighting and fire protection operations, as well as supervisory and leadership skills.

Pay

Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement. Salary Negotiations for those candidates who are new to Federal service may be authorized.

Schedule

This position requires a 60-hour work week with one 24-hour shift. The position has been designated Mission Essential and is subject to immediate recall and extended shifts during emergencies.
