About the Role

Provides oversight and local operations management of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) supporting Surgical Services, various nursing units, and off-site clinics. Ensures coordinated and timely delivery of reprocessed items to clinical stakeholders within the health care organization. Ensures local facility sterilization and High-Level Disinfection (HLD) functions comply with all regulatory requirements. Manages SPD personnel and serves as liaison between SPD and other departments. Maintains effective interdepartmental relationships, coordinates, and resolves problems, and ensures cooperation with other programs and services.

In conjunction with Surgical Services Director, manages the overall SPD budget including determining resource needs, allocating resources, and ensuring proper utilization in productivity, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of SPD operations. Develops and maintains a system of internal reviews that ensure service programs operate in compliance with regulatory and accrediting organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage local operations of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD).
  • Ensure timely delivery of reprocessed items to clinical stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements for sterilization and High-Level Disinfection (HLD).
  • Manage SPD personnel and act as liaison between SPD and other departments.
  • Maintain effective interdepartmental relationships and resolve operational problems.
  • Manage the SPD budget in collaboration with the Surgical Services Director.
  • Develop and maintain internal review systems for regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • 4-5 years minimum experience in Sterile Processing with increasing responsibility.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Manual dexterity to assemble and disassemble complex instrumentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word) and instrument management applications (Censis, OneSource).
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English due to the highly technical nature of interpreting manufacturer’s Instructions For Use (IFU).

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required; Associates degree or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Certification as Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) is required.
  • Additional certifications must be acquired within two years of employment:
    • Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS), Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER), and Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) through HSPA, or
    • Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS), Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER), and Certified in Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) through CBSPD.
  • Certifications must be maintained as a term of employment.

Effective January 30, 2022, all new hires must have the required SPD certifications. Incumbent SPD supervisors must obtain the credentials within 24 months of transitioning to the SPD Supervisor role and keep them current thereafter.
