Why Does the Job Exist?
The primary purpose of the Speech & Language Pathologist is to evaluate, plan, direct, and treat all patients referred to speech/language pathology treatments to restore function and prevent disability following disease or injury.
How Does It Get Done?
- Conduct initial evaluation and assessment of residents or patients referred by physicians.
- Diagnoses and develop individual therapy plans.
- Provides training and education to family, caregivers, and other professionals.
Who Are the Customers?
Residents at a long-term care facility.
Ideal Candidate
- The ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
- The ability to function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
Minimum Qualification
- Licensed as a Speech Language Pathologist by the State of New Mexico and two (2) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.
- Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
- This position is designated as safety sensitive.
- Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
- Will be screened for tuberculosis (TB) upon hire.
- Employment is subject to nationwide criminal background check (Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.
- Licensure to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist in New Mexico.
Working Conditions
- Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., nurses¿ stations, resident rooms, etc.).
- Moves intermittently during working hours.
- Is subject to frequent interruptions.
- Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc.,
- Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
- Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department directors.
- Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
- Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
- Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.,
- Is subject to exercising and massaging residents.
- Is subject to lifting, carrying and supporting residents.
- Must be constantly alert for resident safety.
- Attends and participates in continuing educational programs as may be required by current regulations.
- Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
