About the Role

This position meets the minimum CLIA qualifications of a Laboratory General Supervisor. Under the direction of the Laboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Supervisor coordinates and manages the day-to-day operations of specific laboratory section(s) and shift(s). This role serves in an administrative capacity with direct reports and functions in an exempt pay status. The Laboratory Supervisor develops and implements new procedures, instrumentation, quality control, and reagent use in conjunction with the Laboratory Director and/or Manager. Additionally, this role is responsible for maintaining policies and procedures that meet regulatory agency standards and implementing service quality improvements.

Responsibilities

• Provides day-to-day supervision of high, moderate, and waived complexity test performance by laboratory testing personnel.
• Must be accessible to address technical problems via on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation with testing personnel at any time testing is performed.
• Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards as required by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities such as CLIA, TJC, CAP, AABB, etc.
• Plans, organizes, and coordinates the work activities of assigned section(s) and shift(s).
• Maintains accurate attendance, time, and attendance records for the department.
• Assists the Director/Manager in maintaining the Laboratory budget, including monthly analysis and variance reporting on expense detail.
• Assists the Director/Manager in associate performance conversations that drive merit increases.
• Develops, implements, and maintains current procedural manuals for all tests performed in the assigned section(s) and updates them biennially or more often as necessary.
• Enforces all safety policies and procedures.
• Researches, evaluates, and implements new and improved procedures, methodologies, instrumentation, and techniques.
• Implements an appropriate section and/or shift-specific Quality Control Program and maintains all applicable Quality Control and Functional Verification records.
• Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
• Reviews work done by technologists/technicians to ensure a minimum of errors and takes corrective action for good patient care.
• Refers clinical problems to the laboratory director, manager, or supervisor as appropriate.
• Ensures remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
• Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots all equipment in assigned section(s) to keep in good working order.
• Prepares and submits routine or special administrative and technical reports by due dates.
• Orders and maintains inventories for all necessary supplies and reagents in assigned section(s).
• Trains new technologists and technicians in assigned section(s) procedures and policies and provides subsequent training in new or revised procedures.
• Assists in designing, implementing, collecting, and analyzing data for a comprehensive performance improvement program.
• Prepares and conducts in-service education for assigned section(s) and shift(s).
• Provides input on personnel decisions such as hiring, firing, transfer, and disciplinary actions.
• Performs skills review and competency assessments and maintains appropriate documentation.
• Oversees and enforces expectations of personnel in assigned section(s).
• Participates in proficiency testing surveys and reviews/evaluates results.
• Coordinates and attends meetings to discuss changes and developments regarding policies, equipment, procedures, and staffing.
• Utilizes and has a thorough working knowledge of the Laboratory Information System.
• Demonstrates competence in performing patient care responsibilities to meet the needs of patients served by the department.
• Adapts patient assessment, treatment, and care methods to accommodate unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, and age-specific needs.
• Processes patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution, with consideration for minimal pediatric specimen volumes.
• Performs routine and complicated laboratory procedures in the primary assigned section.
• Provides notification and documentation of critical laboratory values obtained.
• Calculates, enters, and verifies results of laboratory procedures.
• Ensures confidentiality of patients and does not disclose confidential information unless necessary for job duties.
• Stays current with advancements in Medical Technology through reading journals, attending workshops, and participating in professional associations.
• Demonstrates adherence to the CORE values of CHRISTUS Health.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent education in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from a regionally accredited college/university, or equivalent years of experience.
• 5 years of experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technician.
• 5 years of full-time primary experience in the specific section of responsibility.

Qualifications

• Active certification or certification eligibility for MT (ASCP), CLS (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), CLS (NCA/ASCP), or MT (AAB).
