This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position working Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The role is considered mobile, offering a combination of work-from-home flexibility and onsite responsibilities. The Supervisor must be available to work onsite as needed at the Midway Corporate Campus and Fairview Riverside University Hospital. The Release of Information department operates in a high-volume, fast-paced environment and supports a 24/7 call center. The ROI Supervisor participates in the department's on-call rotation to assist with urgent needs outside of regular business hours.

About the role

The Supervisor of Health Information Management - Release of Information (ROI) leads one or more Health Information Management business units, ensuring staff, daily operations, and performance outcomes meet organizational and departmental goals. This role provides leadership, oversight, and support to ensure the team achieves daily work targets while collaborating with the HIM Manager/Director on strategic plans, staff assignments, and operational efficiency. The Supervisor acts as a subject matter expert, maintains system proficiency, and works with cross-functional Revenue Cycle departments to maximize efficiency and revenue potential.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication, accountability, integrity, critical thinking, adaptability, and a customer-focused approach. As Health Information Management evolves with advancements in technology and artificial intelligence, the candidate should be comfortable embracing new technologies and understanding how AI can improve HIM and ROI operations. Flexibility and the ability to adjust to changing priorities and workflows are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Set, oversee, adjust, and ensure daily production of work is completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Monitor and drive adherence to department metrics while managing staff performance, including ongoing feedback, coaching, and counseling.
  • Demonstrate financial acumen by setting specific goals, standards, and objectives for intra-departmental processes in collaboration with leadership.
  • Manage staff performance, including hiring, training, assigning work, evaluating performance, and conducting professional development plans.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and partner with operations leadership to implement changes in system automation, workflow efficiency, metric performance, and people management.
  • Partner with leadership to share operational needs, establish decision-making criteria, recommend changes, and implement modifications.
  • Ensure team actions align with and support the overall operational goals of the department.
  • Continuously optimize workflow and proactively identify, communicate, and prioritize opportunities for process improvement.
  • Maintain and enhance team proficiency with system navigation and changes to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Provide oversight to ensure compliance with established laws, regulations, practices, and procedures.
  • Ensure both the team and oneself remain knowledgeable about and compliant with all relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Champion employee engagement, collaboration, and investment, fostering a positive culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Promote innovation to achieve top-tier performance within the Health Information Management Department.
  • Demonstrate and provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Teams, SharePoint, and Outlook.
  • Apply knowledge of health information regulations, laws, and accreditation standards for effective leadership oversight.
  • Utilize knowledge of medical terminology, medical record documentation requirements, and health data management.
  • Understand documentation practices and workflows on clinical units.
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, and conflict management skills.
  • Demonstrate strong computer and data analysis skills, as well as verbal and written communication and presentation abilities.
  • Identify issues, gather relevant information, and evaluate alternatives to arrive at effective solutions.
  • Build effective partnerships with medical staff and physicians, fostering open communication and trust.
  • Organize and express information clearly and actionably in written form for individuals and groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including after-hours on-call support for the ROI call center.

Requirements

  • A.A./A.S. in Business, Health Information Management, or a related area or 3 years of experience within an applicable Revenue Cycle Department (may substitute for the associate degree).
  • 2 years of experience in Health Information Management or a Hospital/Clinic with similar duties and responsibilities. This experience must be in addition to the 3 years required in lieu of an associate degree.
  • One or more of the following certifications: RHIA, RHIT, or a Microcredential appropriate for the role (e.g., Release of Information, Health Data Literacy, or Patient Identification and Matching).

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S./B.A. in Health Information Management, Business Administration, or a related area.
  • 5 years of experience in health information management with similar duties and progressive responsibilities.
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification.

Pay

The posted pay range is for a 40-hour workweek (1.0 FTE). The actual rate of pay offered may depend on factors such as FTE, skills, knowledge, relevant education, experience, and market conditions. Additionally, the organization values pay equity and considers internal equity when making offers. Hiring at the maximum of the range is not typical. If eligible, a sign-on bonus may be offered based on the approved program at the time of the offer.
