About the role

The Planning and Zoning Specialist assists developers and the public to achieve compliance with the City’s planning and zoning policies and procedures. They assist in professional planning research and analysis of data.

Responsibilities

  • Affords the public in applying planning requirements, zoning regulations, and information to project construction plans
  • Affords the public in making applications for zoning changes and variances
  • Receives and reviews applications for zoning and variances requests
  • Provides information regarding planning elements for subdivisions, conditional use permits, zoning, general plan amendments, variances, historical district designations, and application processes
  • Provides customer service to the public by assisting in the application process, responding to inquiries or complaints regarding planning and zoning issues
  • Accepts and reviews business and liquor license application packets for completeness
  • Completes plan review checks for site plans logged in for review and site inspection
  • Completes or participates in special projects for internal and external processes as assigned
  • Prepares public presentations for various Boards and Commissions in written, graphic and oral reports
  • Processes Historic District Review Commission and Design Review Committee cases
  • Solves routine problems encountered in performance of work assignments
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and city urban planning and development laws, rules, regulations, codes and ordinances
  • Knowledge of historical land and property records and data collection research techniques
  • Knowledge of municipal planning, zoning and growth management analysis practices, principles and techniques
  • Knowledge of customer service methods and techniques

Skills

  • Effective oral and written communications
  • Analyzing and compiling technical and statistical data or information
  • Coordinating and managing assigned special planning projects
  • Preparing technical reports and recommendations
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others

Pay

The starting salary range for this position is $50,000 to $60,000 annually.

Schedule

The schedule for this position is typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Additional Requirement

To be considered for this position, applicants must live within fifteen (15) miles of the City limits and within the United States. Applicants must also have a valid Arizona Driver's License.
