About the role

The Supervisor position is responsible for the safe performance of maintenance, construction, repair, inspection, and operation activities on substation and associated equipment and structures, with regular field presence required to oversee crews and support field operations. You will mentor and develop the team while ensuring compliance with the Standards of Business Conduct and EH&S policies. The role fosters an accident-free culture, strives for Operational Excellence, maintains an effective Cost Management culture, and enhances the customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct On the Job training (OJT), effective job briefings, and documented job site safety exchanges.
  • Supervise and direct mechanics, engineering inspectors, operators, and subordinate personnel in the safe performance of maintenance, construction, repair, inspection, and operational activities on substations and associated equipment and structures.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, and assign personnel to perform work based on project schedules and operational needs, optimizing productivity.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with all operating procedures, OSHA laws, safety procedures, and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Mentor and develop personnel while ensuring compliance with the Standards of Business Conduct, EH&S policies, Equal Employment Opportunity, substance abuse policies, security, and other applicable company policies.
  • Coach on performance, administer OJT, provide job briefings, perform documented job site safety exchanges (JSSE), and enforce good housekeeping practices.
  • Enforce all contractual and local work rules and assign personnel to jobs in accordance with Weekly Work Schedules and station schedules.
  • Interface with various Con Edison departments and personnel who enter substations (e.g., Electric Operations, Transmission Operations, Central Engineering).
  • Work a rotating shift schedule and attend daily management meetings to report job progress.
  • Be fully knowledgeable of work scopes and submit Work Permit Requests clearly and concisely.
  • Work with Field Planners and Central Planning to improve work plans and provide feedback.
  • Order, coordinate, account for, and ensure availability and timely delivery of materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Foster a Zero Accident Culture, embrace Diversity and Inclusion, strive for Operational Excellence, maintain an effective Cost Management Culture, and enhance the customer experience.
  • Ensure all personnel, tools, and materials are safely and effectively utilized, incorporating Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools into daily activities.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
  • Utilize work management software applications such as Engage, Maximo, and Datasplice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of related work experience, including 2 years in operations, maintenance, or construction of power generation, transmission, or distribution; or
  • Associate’s Degree and 4 years of related work experience, including 4 years in operations, maintenance, or construction of power generation, transmission, or distribution equipment; or
  • High School Diploma/GED and 5 years of related work experience, including 5 years in operations, maintenance, or construction of power generation, transmission, or distribution equipment.
  • Technical experience or working knowledge in the operation, maintenance, construction, inspection, and repair of electrical transmission and distribution systems, including substation operations, switchgear installation, grounding practices, circuit breaker mechanics, and electrical distribution transformers.
  • Computer literacy with practical applications in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and work management systems such as Maximo, Engage, and OSS.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, good presentation skills, and the ability to interact effectively with internal and external customers, support staff, management, and union personnel.
  • Detail-oriented, able to work under pressure, and handle multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Exercise independent judgment and render sound business decisions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge in the operation, maintenance, or construction of power generation, transmission, and distribution equipment.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Respirator Fit Test (1 Year Required).
  • Approval to wear SCBA and/or respirator.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to respond to system emergencies.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, including excessive heat and/or cold, and perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions.
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces.
  • Work in, under, and on top of all types of company vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Work in adverse conditions, including noise, confined spaces, and high elevations.
  • Climb ladders, stairs, and work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and other equipment.
  • Work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (e.g., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces).
  • Work with and in the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems.
  • Climb in and out of manholes and excavations.
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday.
  • Use hand tools and operate heavy machinery (e.g., jackhammers).
  • Travel to company locations for storm restoration and heat contingencies.
  • Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment.
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses.
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Work with equipment rated up to 350 lbs.
  • Use personal vehicle(s) to transport, store, and secure company laptops and other job-related equipment (reimbursement available through company mileage procedure).

The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (emergency response role) and expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
