Supervising Lifeguard

About the role

The City of Medford is seeking two full-time Supervising Lifeguards to join the Rogue X aquatics team. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced aquatics professional to lead, develop, and support staff while delivering high-quality programs that enhance the community.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise staff, including assigning work, scheduling, providing guidance, employee development, hiring, disciplinary recommendations, etc.
  • Conduct performance management reviews and evaluations of direct reports.
  • Take daily attendance of swim participants.
  • Develop and supervise swim lesson curriculum for various age groups and skill levels.
  • Assign instructors to teach lessons; keep accurate progress records on participants and instructors.
  • Administer the School to Pool program and other programs as directed.
  • Supervise and participate in lifeguard deck coverage rotations.
  • Auxiliary in scheduling staff and ensuring accurate payroll data entry.
  • Participate in department and division staff training and meetings.
  • Enforce City policies, rules, and regulations related to aquatics management.
  • Maintain a clean and safe facility by performing cleaning duties.
  • Follow emergency action plans and provide emergency care/treatment as required.
  • Cautious and educate swimmers against dangerous situations.
  • Ensure pool water chemical tests are conducted hourly.
  • Assist patrons with putting on life jackets.
  • Complete entries into aquatic opening and closing logs.
  • Complete designated job tasks, special projects, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least two seasons of lifeguarding experience in a formal recreation setting.
  • Two years of progressively responsible aquatics program and/or lifeguard experience, including lead worker, training, mentoring, or supervisory responsibilities.
  • A bachelor’s degree in recreation management, leisure services, education, business management, or another specific area of study may substitute for one year of aquatics program experience, but does not substitute for required leadership or supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.
  • Swim lesson instruction experience.
  • Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification.
  • Aquatic Facility Operator/Certified Pool Operator (AFO/CPO) certification.

Pay and Schedule

  • Compensation range: $32.26 (first step) to $35.57 (third step).
  • Schedule: Five 8-hour shifts per week, generally Monday - Friday, with rotating weekend shifts as scheduled.
