About the role

This position provides supervision of professional safety staff by advising and prioritizing projects, ensuring accountability of project completion, and ensuring that professional personnel have the appropriate resources needed. The role fosters a positive attitude and environment while promoting a solution-based approach. It serves as a professional contact for plant personnel to utilize in hazard/risk analysis during project planning, work tasks, or other operations. The position ensures programs and procedures are in place to guide plant personnel when direct consultation is not practical. Additionally, it acts as a liaison to contractors for direction, interpretation, and enforcement of Westlake safety and health rules and regulations. The role adds value by improving worker morale through a cleaner, healthier work environment and by reducing personnel injuries and property damage.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates strong safety culture through personal behavior and commitment to environmental, health, and safety.
  • Participates in the PACE culture of safety.
  • Develops, coordinates, and conducts safety and health training.
  • Develops and implements health and safety processes.
  • Reviews and revises health and safety procedures.
  • Routinely observes tasks and work in the field.
  • Conducts assessments of jobs and compliance with Life Critical Procedures.
  • Conducts and participates in incident investigations.
  • Participates in emergency response.
  • Supports operating units in health and safety matters.
  • Provides subject matter expertise for OSHA and other related regulations.
  • Provides health and safety support for turnarounds.
  • Participates on safety committees.
  • Supports contractor safety management.
  • Supports implementation of VPP at the site.
  • Conducts performance reviews and provides constructive feedback for safety staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety & Health or related field preferred, or in lieu of degree, a minimum of 10 years of related industry experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial safety experience in petrochemicals or chemicals manufacturing.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of regulatory compliance laws (OSHA 1910 – General Industry).
  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene.
  • Strong computer skills, with a good working knowledge of related databases and applications.
  • Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Exhibits positivity, passion, integrity, and accountability.
  • Able to work in a team-oriented environment.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, and walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and infrequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must frequently make minor decisions requiring limited judgment, general decisions in the absence of specific directions, and perform activities requiring sustained concentration.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is sometimes moderate when working in an office. However, some work may be required in operating units, which mandates the use of required PPE, including safety glasses and hearing protection. May also result in exposure to outside elements and require the use of stairs. Some travel may be required.
