SUP Yoga Instructor

About the role

Under the supervision of the MBAC Instructional Coordinator and MBAC Paddling Program Assistant, SUP Yoga Instructors will teach students of all ages with varying levels of experience how to practice yoga on a stand up paddleboard. Instruction occurs both on land and on the water.

Responsibilities

  • Create a positive learning environment and educate students on the basics of paddling and fundamentals of safe yoga practice
  • Inspect equipment before and after class and perform preventative maintenance
  • Supervise and ensure the safety of students, MBAC staff, and other water users
  • Keep records of attendance and direct students in cleanup
  • Provide an outstanding, safe, and educational experience to students on land and in the water
  • Explain and demonstrate proper SUP Yoga techniques and equipment care
  • Prepare customers for a safe experience by providing thorough introductions to equipment and safety requirements
  • Monitor changing weather and water traffic conditions and make appropriate decisions to ensure safety
  • Accurately document and organize class-related paperwork
  • Prepare and clean up classroom, materials, and equipment
  • Maintain strong communication with MBAC Office Assistants and other Instructional Staff

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience teaching paddling and group yoga required
  • Prior teaching experience required

License & Certifications

  • RYT 200 Certification from an accredited yoga program required
  • Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding (may be obtained after hire date through MBAC)
  • American Canoe Association SUP Level 1 Instructor Certification (may be obtained after hire date through MBAC)
  • FBI, DOJ, and LiveScan fingerprint clearance
  • Current valid Driver’s License

Trainings

  • Anti-Harassment Training (must be completed within 30 days of hire)
  • Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Training (must be completed within 30 days of hire)
  • Gender Awareness Training (must be completed within 30 days of hire)
  • MBAC All Staff Training
  • MBAC Safe Powerboat Handling

Physical Demands

  • Swimming, including in rough and deep water
  • Walking, running, or walking/running over rough or uneven surfaces
  • Bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying loads
  • Ability to swim at least 550 yards, dive at least 10 feet deep, swim with a 10-pound object for at least 20 yards, and tread water for at least 2 minutes
  • Ability to watch and supervise groups of students on the water while coaching technique and supervising safety
  • Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies and prevent injuries or drowning

Work Environment

The work environment involves exposure to salt water, cold water, sun, wind, rain, weather, sand, seaweed, sea grass, ocean currents, sea creatures, breaking waves, and other outdoor elements.
