Position Summary
Aid the hygienist in setting up equipment, preparing patients for hygiene treatments, and maintaining patient records.
Essential Functions
- Prepare patients, sterilize or disinfect instruments, set up instrument trays, and assist dentists or hygienists during dental procedures.
- Record treatment information in patient records.
- Expose dental diagnostic x-rays and manage x-ray sensor care and guidelines.
- Coronally polish teeth to assist the hygienist during preventative and/or periodontal visits.
- Take and record medical and dental histories and vital signs of patients.
- Assist the hygienist in managing medical or dental emergencies.
- Provide postoperative instructions and follow-up calls to patients.
- Instruct patients on oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
- Order and monitor dental supplies and equipment inventory for the hygiene department.
- Schedule appointments and make necessary calls to maintain a full hygiene schedule.
- Follow up on missed appointments and reschedule as needed.
- Apply fluoride to teeth and apply sealants as prescribed by the dentist.
Skills & Abilities
- High School Graduate or GED
- Completion of Dental Assisting school or minimum three months experience in a dental office
- Dental Assistant permit within 30 days of employment required
- Certified in Coronial Polish Certificate and Radiation Certificate within six months of employment
- Knowledge of Dental Software (Eaglesoft preferred)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
