About the Role

ING’s Wholesale Banking division offers a broad range of innovative financial products and services to domestic and international corporate and institutional clients. The Summer 2027 Internship within the Risk Management function provides an opportunity to work in one of the following departments in New York:

  • Transactional Approval and Advisory (TA&A): Responsible for analysis, advice, and decision-making on tailored (lending) transactions for key Wholesale Banking clients in the Americas. You will assist in recommending and deciding on credit applications, modifications, and risk rating reviews, with exposure to portfolio/sector review meetings and various credit products.
  • Trading Risk Management (TRM): A central part of ING’s Financial Risk management framework, TRM assesses, monitors, and manages risks of financial markets products. You will learn to report and analyze daily market risk reports (VaR, sensitivities, and other risk controls) and reconcile daily trading and funding P&L. You will gain experience with systems such as Sophis, MUREX, Summit, and Peoplesoft, and contribute to projects related to reporting and reconciliation efficiencies.
  • Counterparty Credit Risk (CCR): Supports the financial markets business by managing credit exposure on trading activities with financial institutions. You will assist in fundamental credit analysis, peer financial analysis, risk reporting, and monitoring, including preparing credit reports, limits, and ratings. You will also participate in due-diligence calls with C-level management of ING’s counterparties.
  • Credit Restructuring: Focuses on finding solutions for large customers in financial difficulty. You will contribute to evaluating problem credits and recommending strategies to maximize recoveries, with exposure to complex, large, and often international credits across various sectors.
  • Operational Risk Management (ORM)/Information Risk Management (IRM): ORM monitors adherence to risk policies and the functioning of management control activities, while IRM focuses on IT-related and continuity risks. You will assist in risk reporting, monitoring, and ensuring the protection and resilience of ING’s information and infrastructure.
  • Model Risk Management (MRM): Oversees risks associated with model development, implementation, and use across the firm. You will support the validation of models used for credit risk, market risk, anti-money laundering, fraud detection, and other areas, ensuring compliance with regulatory and governance standards.
  • Integrated Risk Management (IRM): Provides a holistic view of risk across the organization by coordinating the enterprise risk framework. You will assist in identifying, assessing, monitoring, and reporting on key risks, including operational, strategic, financial, compliance, and third-party risks.
  • Compliance: Ensures that ING operates in compliance with regulations and internal policies. You will engage in activities related to financial crime, conflicts of interest, data privacy, and emerging risks such as artificial intelligence and climate change, while supporting routine monitoring and special projects.

Upon completion of the internship, you will have developed foundational skills in risk management, financial analysis, and reporting, with exposure to various asset classes, trading systems, and risk frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in analyzing and delivering market risk and P&L reports, including VaR, sensitivities, and other risk controls.
  • Reconcile and report daily trading and funding P&L.
  • Develop a working knowledge of systems such as Sophis, MUREX, Summit, and Peoplesoft.
  • Support senior analysts with credit analysis, peer financial analysis, and preparation of credit reports, limits, and ratings.
  • Participate in risk reporting and monitoring, including out-of-policy collateral and periodic market reports.
  • Contribute to special projects related to your field of study, such as streamlining reporting efficiencies or evaluating problem credits.
  • Assist in the validation and monitoring of models used for risk management, compliance, and financial forecasting.
  • Engage in routine compliance activities and special projects, including monitoring for financial crime, data privacy, and emerging risks.
  • Support the evaluation of problem credits and recommend strategies to maximize recoveries for the institution.
  • Participate in portfolio/sector review meetings and due-diligence calls with counterparties.

Requirements

  • Rising senior pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in finance, economics, or a business-related field (graduating in 2028).
  • Minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Strong multi-tasking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of performance motivation and eagerness to learn.
  • Comfortable with Excel and spreadsheets; working knowledge of VBA, Access, SQL, SAS, or Python is a plus.
  • Good quantitative and analytical skills, with a basic understanding of financial instruments preferred but not required.
  • Solid understanding of financial analysis and econometrics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Team player who can work collaboratively with others.

Pay

Hourly rate: $35/hour.

Schedule

Full-time, paid seasonal internship starting June 2027 (10 weeks). In-office work requirements dependent on role.
