About the role
Bolton & Menk has an exciting opportunity for a SUE Field Technician II to join our Emerging Markets & Services team. This position offers the opportunity to work with a growing Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) practice that supports transportation, municipal, water, energy, and land development projects throughout the United States.
Responsibilities
- Utility Designation: Designate and document existing underground utilities utilizing geophysical locating equipment and industry standards, including ASCE 38-22 Quality Levels.
- Survey & Data Collection: Assist with utility surveying, mapping, and utility data collection activities to support accurate project deliverables.
- Vacuum Excavation: Operate vacuum excavation equipment to safely expose and verify underground utility locations.
- Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain company vehicles, vacuum trucks, and specialized field equipment including utility locating devices, compressors, air lances, concrete saws, and hand tools.
- Traffic Control & Safety: Assist in implementing approved traffic control plans and follow all applicable safety requirements during field operations.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate project documentation, field notes, and records while protecting the confidentiality of company and client information.
- Travel: Travel frequently to project sites and other project-related locations as necessary to support project delivery.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in Surveying Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, Geomatics, or a related field preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in utility locating, Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), surveying, construction inspection, utility construction, or related field services.
- Experience operating geophysical utility locating equipment preferred.
- Experience with vacuum excavation equipment or utility exposure techniques preferred.
- Basic understanding of ASCE 38 standards and utility quality levels.
- Knowledge of underground utility systems including water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, electric, gas, and telecommunications infrastructure.
- Ability to read maps, utility records, construction plans, and field documentation.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work safely in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
- Valid driver's license.

Pay
$45,000 - $75,000 depending on years of experience and credentials.
