About the Role
The Substitute Paraeducator I, II, and III positions assist in conducting positive learning experiences for students under direct supervision. Responsibilities include performing clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel, assisting in the supervision and instruction of special education students, and providing for special health care needs.
Paraeducator II incumbents are distinguished by their assignment to assist students in special programs, including special day and resource programs for students with identified mental, emotional, physical, or learning disabilities.
Responsibilities
- Assist certificated teachers in classroom operations, including teaching academic skills to students with mental, emotional, physical, or learning disabilities.
- Supervise students to maintain an effective learning environment, noting behavioral issues and assisting in discipline within established policies.
- Prepare instructional materials and equipment; type, copy, and gather resources as assigned.
- Provide feedback on student progress through observation and daily contact; maintain accurate student progress records.
- Administer and correct tests, assignments, and homework.
- Establish and maintain informational and operational records; report and track student progress.
- Monitor and assist students using equipment such as computer terminals, cassette recorders, and audio-visual media.
- Oversee and supervise students during classroom activities, on campus, in the library, and on field trips.
- Operate instructional media, office machines, and equipment.
- Tutor students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning activities.
- Assist in self-contained instructional settings and track progress for individual students in core academic subjects.
- Support other personnel in completing their work activities.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Prior job-related experience (paid or volunteer) with school-age children.
- Skills in basic clerical functions, arithmetic, and operating standard office equipment.
- Proficiency in written and verbal English, including correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Knowledge of child development principles, instructional processes, and public education goals.
- Ability to understand and address students with special needs, follow oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines.
- Physical abilities: stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing, near/far visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, negative pre-employment drug screen, and negative TB test results.
- Pass the District’s adopted Proficiency Examination with a satisfactory score.
- First Aid and CPR Certificates may be required.
Pay
Single rate of $16.90 per hour.
