About the role

As a Substitute Para Educator, you will provide instructional support and assistance within the classroom setting. You may also provide physical and instructional support outside the classroom for students who have moderate, severe, and multiple disabilities. This role works under the direction of a licensed staff member and develops good community relations among various community and school clientele.

Responsibilities

  • Provides individual and small group instruction of students in general educational classrooms, ILC center-based classrooms, and work/job training settings.
  • Works one-on-one with students in tutoring and skill building, as well as role-modeling.
  • Utilizes teacher-produced lesson plans to assist in teaching toward each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), including:
    • Teaching academic and life skills;
    • Job training on sites;
    • Developing social interactions between students with special needs and general education peers;
    • Reinforcing and generating communication skills, including the use of augmentative communication devices for students with mild language disabilities to non-verbal capabilities.
  • Provides technical physical care for students, which may include:
    • Toileting, grooming, and cleaning ventilation devices;
    • Feeding and care of G-tubes;
    • Positioning, improving range of motion, and administering medications.
  • Maintains daily records of student progress and behavior.
  • Uses instructional equipment, including computers, audio-visual tools, adaptive equipment, tape recorders, film projectors, and other school equipment.
  • Maintains a clean and hygienic work environment where appropriate.
  • Maintains confidentiality of students’ information and records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work one-on-one or in small groups with students.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
  • Familiarity with general office equipment.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional bending, reaching, and climbing.
  • Extremely heavy physical effort (lifting over 50 pounds).
  • Normal school district environment.
  • Frequent interaction with others.
  • Frequent lifting, pulling, and/or pushing.
  • May assist students with custodial needs (feeding/toileting).

Pay
