Substitute Para-Educator

About the role

This position serves on an on-call/substitute basis, assisting certificated staff by performing instructional support tasks related to students' educational development within the school environment.

Responsibilities

• Work with students under the direction of certificated teachers to facilitate academic skills and language development.
• Provide instructional support for IEP students by attending to program needs including reading, writing, math, and social/behavior skills.
• Learn instructional techniques under the direction of a teacher and independently carry out instructional programs developed by the supervising teacher.
• Aid in the development and use of teaching aids and materials.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers.
• Assist in assessing students.
• Monitor and assist student progress in the classroom and other school activities.
• Aid in required record keeping.
• May assist with personal hygiene needs of students in special education classrooms to include toileting and feeding.
• Promote positive public relations when communicating with the public.

Requirements

High School diploma or GED. Experience working with students in an educational setting and/or evidence of an interest in supporting learning experiences. Preferred: ability to communicate effectively using both English and Spanish, to include reading, writing, and speaking.

Skills

Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents. Desire to be a role model for students and to interact positively with students. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the public.

Qualifications

Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor. Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
