Responsibilities
- Work at a variety of school buildings and classrooms with sometimes limited notice as to assignment
- Support a diverse student population, including regular education, behavior disordered, physically/mentally disabled, at-risk, preschool through high school-aged, and students from diverse ethnic/socioeconomic backgrounds
- Provide academic assistance, social adjustment, and skill instruction under classroom teacher supervision
- Assist with daily student activities and routine care
- Follow teacher directions for instruction and model flexibility as student needs change
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and patience in all interactions
- Assist with lunchroom duties and playground supervision as needed
- Use positive reinforcement and appropriate guidance techniques to manage developmental behavior, including transitions and activity redirection
- Assist with student arrival and/or departure
- Work effectively as part of a team and with individuals, small groups, or large groups
- Maintain confidentiality per District rules and regulations
- Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills with students, parents, and staff
- Prepare materials for classroom teachers
- Multi-task, follow directions, and anticipate/solve problems
- Use office equipment including fax machines, copiers, computers, and telephones
- Perform other duties as assigned by building Administrator(s)
Physical Requirements
- Work in multi-level buildings requiring stair use
- Walk medium to long distances in hallways
- Stand more than half the time
- Lift up to 50 pounds
- Work outside in a variety of weather conditions
- Reach, bend, and squat as needed
- Assist with student transfers from wheelchairs, depending on classroom needs
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Flexible, dependable, punctual, and responsible
- Friendly, caring, compassionate, patient, understanding, sensitive, and firm personality
- Basic computer knowledge may be necessary
- Experience working with children preferred
- Good communication and organizational skills
