Substitute Custodian

About the Role

Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain buildings, locker rooms, and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly, and secure condition.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine custodial activities: sweep, scrub, mop, wax, and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops, and other assigned areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets; perform carpet repairs as assigned.
• Clean classrooms, restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeterias, offices, and related facilities; clean gymnasium floors; monitor gym events to ensure orderly behavior and protect the building from damage; clean tables, chairs, and floors after lunch periods.
• Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, sinks, toilets, showers, and urinals; clean mirrors, tile, and windows.
• Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards; recommend maintenance repairs; maintain building security; report suspicious or unauthorized individuals; report rule infractions to supervisor.
• Wash windows and walls; clean chalkboards, trays, and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners; assemble, move, and arrange furniture for special events or meetings.
• Clean venetian blinds, dust and polish furniture, and make minor non-technical repairs as needed.
• Lock and unlock doors and gates; maintain security of assigned areas; manage alarm systems as directed.
• Order supplies according to established guidelines and procedures.
• Pick up and rake paper, trash, and debris around school grounds and buildings; sweep and clean walkways and entrances; dispose of trash according to sanitation procedures.
• Pack, unpack, load, receive, and store books, supplies, materials, and other items.
• Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor strippers, buffers, polishers, carpet shampooers, scrubbers, high-pressure sprayers, power sweepers, and blowers.
• Shovel, plow, and sand walks and steps as directed.
• Respond to emergency cleanups such as spills; maintain records of maintenance, repair needs, and safety issues.
• Participate in major summer cleaning projects as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned; maintain regular attendance.

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
• Knowledge of basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial work and routine maintenance.
• Knowledge of proper methods for storing equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Ability to perform routine custodial activities to maintain clean, orderly, and secure facilities.
• Ability to use cleaning materials, equipment, and methods according to standards.
• Ability to learn and apply safety precautions and procedures.
• Ability to maintain tools and equipment in clean working order and provide proper security.
• Ability to perform minor non-technical repairs and observe/report maintenance needs.
• Ability to perform heavy physical labor, follow oral and written directions, and meet schedules.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others and inspect facilities for security.
