Custodian
About the role
This is a temporary, full-time position, 40 hours per week, for a duration of 90 days from the start date. The schedule will be Monday – Sunday, with flexibility required as hours will vary based on church needs, including nights and weekends as necessary.
The Custodian will report to the Facilities Manager and be responsible for the care, cleanliness, maintenance, orderliness, and safety of the parish facilities and grounds.
Responsibilities
- Cleaning and straightening of the church Sanctuary building on a daily basis, and cleaning of other buildings, including restrooms, floors, office areas, and related custodial duties.
- Assisting with floor refinishing, carpet cleaning, and routine upkeep of the campus.
- Performing light handy work requiring basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry skills.
- Setting up meeting rooms, outdoor areas, and other spaces and facilities on campus, including moving tables and chairs and other furnishings.
- Grounds maintenance, including operating lawn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, and other tools, as well as hand work such as raking, sweeping, and weeding.
- Ensuring trash is collected and disposed of in a timely manner, and reporting shortages or order needs to the Facilities Manager.
- Maintaining the security of buildings, including ensuring they are secure when not in use and security systems are activated when closing at night.
- Other duties as assigned by the Facility Manager, Business Manager, or Pastor.
Requirements
- Supports and adheres to the religious standards, policies, and procedures of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding sensitive matters.
- Ability to serve collaboratively with other members of the parish staff and communicate with members of the parish community.
- Punctuality and reliability are a must to ensure efficient, safe, thorough, and timely operation of the custodial/maintenance program.
- Meet all Archdiocesan employment requirements, provide proof of valid driver’s license and insurance, and serve a 90-day evaluation and probationary period.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent (preferred).
- Experience with past custodial or building maintenance work (preferred).
- Fluency in Spanish is helpful though not required.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and occasionally required to climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch, and must frequently lift and or move up to 50 pounds.
The noise level is moderate in the environment, and the employee will be familiar with personal protective equipment and its proper usage.
