About the role
The Substitute Custodian performs routine cleaning and custodial functions at assigned school sites or facilities to keep buildings and premises neat, clean, and safe.
Responsibilities
- Performs routine janitorial and custodial functions at assigned sites.
- Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, clean and safe.
- Cleans classrooms, restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeterias, gymnasiums, kitchens, offices, and related facilities.
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors, door panels, and hand railings.
- Vacuums rugs and carpets.
- Dusts furniture, empties and cleans trash receptacles.
- Cleans walls, furniture, windows, woodwork, and other equipment.
- Cleans door and window glass and drinking fountains.
- Replaces lights and makes minor maintenance repairs.
- Picks up papers and debris; cleans walkways and entrances.
- Operates cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and polishing machines, and scrubbers.
- Locks and unlocks doors and gates to ensure building security.
- Assists in setting up buildings and rooms for meetings and special events, including arranging chairs, desks, and equipment.
- Responds to emergency cleanups from breakage, vandalism, spills, clogged drains, or illness.
- Observes and reports the need for maintenance repairs.
- Secures facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, loss, and liability.
- Assists other personnel as needed to support work activities.
- When not engaged in custodial activities, may assist with maintenance and grounds work involving heavy manual labor and semiskilled tasks.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Prior job-related experience in a school or institutional setting.
- Valid Driver’s License and evidence of insurability.
- Successful completion of District Proficiency Test.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.
- Negative pre-employment drug screen test and negative TB test results.
- Resume and two letters of reference (preferably dated within the past 3 years).
Skills
- Skills to use cleaning agents, supplies, and equipment.
- Ability to perform basic math to calculate accurate dilution of cleaning agents.
- Knowledge of methods and use of cleaning materials, equipment, and supplies, as well as safe work practices.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods, work independently with minimal supervision, and perform a variety of tasks.
- Ability to adjust to flexible assignments often with short notice.
- Ability to communicate with students, staff, and the public.
- Significant physical abilities including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, reaching, and handling.
- Near/far visual acuity and depth perception.
Pay
$16.90 per hour.
Schedule
On-call daily, with day and evening hours available. Full-time and part-time positions available across various sites.
Offer of employment contingent on pre-employment physical, passing of Proficiency Test, fingerprints, negative drug screen, and TB test. After a conditional offer, applicants will be required to pay the cost of pre-employment processing (drug screening: $52.00, TB testing: $22.00).
