Substitute Custodian

About the Role

A substitute custodian is expected to maintain reliable attendance, punctuality, and follow-through. This is an "at-will" position with no employment rights beyond payment for services rendered. Grounds for termination include two cancellations of accepted assignments with less than 24 hours' notice or failure to accept any assignment within a six-month period.

Requirements

• Subscribe to an Oath of Allegiance
• Pass a general tuberculosis examination
• Undergo fingerprinting
• Complete a pre-placement physical examination
• Provide proof of identity and right to work in the United States
• Comply with the District’s drug-free workplace policy, including passing a drug test
• Possess relevant training, education, and experience for the classification
• Successfully pass all examination parts to be placed on the eligibility list

Selection Process

• Candidates who complete all phases of the application and examination process are ranked on an eligibility list based on total examination score, typically valid for one year.
• For vacant positions, the top three ranked candidates ("certification") are submitted to the appointing authority for selection.
• Regular employees of the District receive a service credit of 0.5 points per year (up to 5 points) added to their final composite scores.
• Veterans and disabled veterans receive preference points as defined by Education Code Section 45296.

Employment Terms

• Initial probationary period of up to six months or 130 days of paid service (includes days worked, approved vacation, and designated holidays).
• Employment is based on the merit principle, with continuing employment contingent on performance.

• Longevity Pay: Increments added to base pay after completing specified years of service:
  • 9 years: 3.5%
  • 14 years: 7.123%

  • 39 years: 31.209%
  • 44 years: 36.457%

• Shift Differential: 3.75% pay increase for shifts where more than four hours fall between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m.
• Sick Leave: 12 days/year for full-time twelve-month employees (prorated for others), with unlimited accumulation.
• Vacation: 12 days/year for full-time twelve-month employees, increasing after 5 years of service (prorated for others).
• Retirement: Mandatory participation in California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and Social Security for employees working 4+ hours/day.
• Professional Growth: After one year of service, employees may earn additional salary increments for continuing education.
